My Learning Community

myLC (my Learning Community) is an experiment in building community and informal leadership roles through location based services. At one level, it helps community organizers set up meeting times, topics, and locations. At another, it is a game that encourages group members to attend meetings and gain mastery of skills that are recognized by custom badges awarded through participation. The goals of the app are to help members of the community learn, know each other, and recognize informal leadership among the members.
The app works by letting group leaders designate locations for meetings with GPS coordinates and then notify other members of the group about meeting times, locations, and who is physically in attendance once the meeting starts. Group members are allowed to privately chat with each other during the meeting. Attendees are rewarded with badges to show participation and mastery of designated skills. As badges accumulate, they identify more experienced members of the group that other members can turn to for questions and help.

Right now, it is limited to UWSP students, teachers, and alumni. Version 2.0 will begin to include other parties.
