El primer libro de la Biblia, Génesis, explica con estas pocas palabras el origen del universo: “En el principio Dios creó los cielos y la tierra” (Génesis 1:1). Después de crear las plantas y los animales, Dios hizo a Adán y Eva, los primeros seres humanos. Algo que los distinguía de los animales era que Dios los dotó de cualidades semejantes a las suyas, entre estas, la libertad de elección. Por consiguiente, eran responsables de sus actos. Si obedecían las instrucciones del Creador, podían ser los padres de una familia humana mundial que disfrutaría para siempre de una vida perfecta y llena de paz en la Tierra, como Dios se había propuesto.
