About Field Guide to Tasmanian Fauna

Explore Tasmania’s unique and diverse wildlife at home or in the great outdoors with the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery’s Field Guide app. Available for both Apple and Android devices, the app combines detailed animal descriptions with stunning imagery and, for some species, sounds to provide a valuable reference that can be used in urban, bush and coastal environments. The app holds descriptions of over 700 species, from animals found in rockpools and minibeasts in your garden, to birds, mammals, lizards and snakes that you might see in the bush. We’ve put in a lot of species, but it’s still a fraction of the complete fauna of Tasmania. Our scientists will continue to add additional species and refine descriptions over time.

If you have trouble either downloading the app or with the app crashing, please refer to our app support page.(http://museumvictoria.com.au/discoverycentre/museum-victoria-apps/mv-field-guide-to-victoria-app/support/)

Great start but needs a lot of work and some more thought. The app includes some species (e.g. tropical turtles) that do not occur in Tasmania. The descriptions for Russalpia albertisi and R. longifurca appear to be identical. It would be helpful to instead explain the difference. There are apps available at a modest price for Australian Birds which are complete, include calls and can be filtered to Tas species. It makes little sense to try to duplicate this material when there are so many other groups for which there is no easily accessible information.

Fantastic reference when out and about to identify the wildlife. My kids love it too.

Love the app, can see great potential as more species are added. One feature that I think would make it an even greater resource would be users being able to add their own photos and locations of sightings.

Has exquisite images and detailed information. The 200Mb download is necessarily large but worth it. Would love to see something similar to the Tasmanian flora.
