O Cinema e a Fronteira
Cinco anos.

The Cinema and the Border
Five years. If I may, a retrospective soon.

There's no way to speak of the International Festival Pachamama - Border Cinema, without thinking of the Transoceanic carretera linking Brazil by the state of Acre to the port of Ilo in the Pacific Ocean, Peru. For the history of the Festival is confused with the completion of the road works.

I followed the final stage of construction, since at the time I was hired by the NGO Amazonlink.Org to make a video about the MAP initiative, the acronym of the three border states who would be directly affected by the large Amazon work: Madre de Dio-Peru, Acre-Pando-Bolivia and Brazil. On that occasion, I met lots of interesting people, like Father René who lived in Iberia - PE and denounced the severe impacts that the work undeniably cause in the region.

Deforestation. Exodus of workers from the Andes to the jungle. Child prostitution. Increased mining. Overcrowded cities, among many others. Much was discussed about the negative impacts and impacts on business, and little is thought about the potential of cultural exchange and growth of the creative economy that the road could foster. Countries so close, however, that lived back to back each other.

In 2009, I made a long journey throughout Bolivia. At the time, I met a cinema and an incredible country unknown to me almost completely. In my college days, I studied the great Brazilian, European and American directors and practically nothing of Latin cinema. The salar of Yuni, between desert, salt and cacti, the idea of Pachamama - Border Cinema begins to be formulated. A festival that could discuss common issues, promote the enjoyment of Latino films and cultural exchange. But did not know where to start.

In one of these meetings that life promotes - for thus it has to be at the end of 2009 I was representing Fest Cineamazônia also our partner and supporter in Atibaia Festival and met the Bolivian Marcelo Cordero, cultural activist and creator of Yanemarai Films. There, thanks to this meeting, was born, in fact, the Pachamama - Border Cinema. It took a meeting space and integration, a regional platform for our production. The road should be a reunion path and Rio Branco a presentation to showcase our cultural products to the border region. In 2010, in its first edition, we reinauguramos Cine playground, our main point of view. In these five years, we have not found your ideal shape - I believe we'll never find. However, we have sought, in each edition, earn more breath, talk to the regional reality, bringing relevant issues to the world around us, promote our cinema - this stranger - honor meaningful names of Latin cinema, with special attention to indigenous, do a bridge between art and movements social and environmental, to approach the academy, form a network of distribution and promotion, establish partnerships with other actions and festivals, decentralize and democratize increasingly our actions, reflect the identity Amazon / Andean contribute in training of local professionals and act in the formation of the plural look.

I conclude with the certainty that only got these five years, the Festival recognized by LatAm Cinema magazine as one of the 25 most promising festivals in the world, as many people believed in this dream. Record here, on behalf of the whole team of the Festival, our thanks to all partners, supporters and sponsors.

As I always say, inspired by Raul: "A dream you dream alone is only a dream that dream alone. But a dream that dream together is reality. "
