Reggae adalah suatu aliran musik yang awalnya dikembangkan di Jamaika pada akhir era 60-an. Sekalipun kerap digunakan secara luas untuk menyebut hampir segala jenis musik Jamaika, istilah reggae lebih tepatnya merujuk pada gaya musik khusus yang muncul mengikuti perkembangan ska dan rocksteady.

Reggae berbasis pada gaya ritmis yang bercirikan aksen pada off-beat atau sinkopasi, yang disebut sebagai skank. Pada umumnya reggae memiliki tempo lebih lambat daripada ska maupun rocksteady. Biasanya dalam reggae terdapat aksentuasi pada ketukan kedua dan keempat pada setiap bar, dengan gitar rhythm juga memberi penekanan pada ketukan ketiga; atau menahan kord pada ketukan kedua sampai ketukan keempat dimainkan. Utamanya "ketukan ketiga" tersebut, selain tempo dan permainan bassnya yang kompleks yang membedakan reggae dari rocksteady, meskipun rocksteady memadukan pembaruan-pembaruan tersebut secara terpisah.

Beberapa nama yang terkenal dalam dunia musik Reggae dan sub-ragamnya Indonesia antara lain Imanez, Tony Q Rastafara, Gangstarasta, Steven & Coconut Treez, Souljah, Ras Muhammad, Joni Agung (Bali), Marapu (Yogyakarta), dan Cozy Republic (Jakarta).

Sekitar tahun 1986 musik Reggae mulai dikumandangkan di Indonesia, band tersebut adalah Black Brothers Papua, Black Company sebuah band dengan genre Reggae, pada tahun 1988 sekelompok anak papua yang sedang study di bandung, mendirikan sebuah group band reggae (Emergency Reggae Band) dan beberapa tahun kemudian muncul Asian Roots yang merupakan turunan dari band sebelumnya, kemudian ada Asian Force dan Abresso, Jamming lalu Tony Q Rastafara. Pada tahun 2001, muncul band Gangstarasta sekelompok anak muda yang memainkan musik reggae, lalu tahun 2006 Steven & Coconut Treez dengan hits "Welcome To My Paradise.ditambah dengan album orang.

Reggae is a music genre first developed in Jamaica in the late 60s. Though often used broadly to refer to almost all types of Jamaican music, the term reggae more properly refer to a special musical style that emerged following the development of ska and rocksteady.

Reggae is based on a rhythmic style characterized by accents on the off-beat or syncopation, which is referred to as the skank. In general, reggae has a slower tempo than ska and rocksteady. Usually in reggae are accentuated in the second and fourth beats in each bar, with the rhythm guitar also gives emphasis on the third knock; or holding the chord on the second tap to knock the four played.
