About Dilute

Dilute performs dilution calculations from a stock solution to a diluted solution. The variables are the concentration and volume of the stock solution, and the concentration and volume of the diluted solution. These are visually laid out on the primary page of Dilute. Any combination of three of the variables may be used to calculate the fourth. The molar mass of the solute is used for converting between molarity, mass ratio and molality. A wide range of concentration and volume units are available in drop down menus.

Calculations on the primary page are currently limited to dilution calculations for a generic solution with a density of 1.00g/mL at all concentrations. This works well for calculations in molarity because molarity is independent of the solution density. However, both mass ratio (%, ppt, ppm and ppb) and molality are density dependent. In order to minimize the error in for mass ratio and molality, calculations are limited to concentrations below 5% by mass. At that limit most calculations will be accurate to within a few percent. The accuracy improves for lower concentrations, as the density of the solution approaches that of the pure solvent.

Swipe from right to left to view the second page. This page contains concentration and density data for solutions of acetic acid. Concentration calculations are limited only by the concentration and density data programmed into the app. The upper concentration limit, for calculations with acetic acid, is shown in molarity and mass percent to the right of the chemical formula and molar mass. The density of the stock and diluted solutions are automatically calculated as shown in the following figure to the left.

Future versions of this app will include density-concentration data for a variety of solutions including common acids and bases such as hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, sulfuric acid, ammnoium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide. Other improvements such as user defined solution densities, significant digit control, and special formatting for tablets are also scheduled.

This is an extension of a project that I began some years ago when I wrote a number of applications for Palm OS. These included a dilution calculator, pH and buffer calculators, mass spectroscopy calculator, as well as physics and weather apps.

I have just begun converting these apps to the Android OS. Dilute is the first.

To the left is the primary page for the Dilute app.

Perfect dilution calculation app. The simplicity of the app belies the capabilities. I've used the Palm based program for over ten years and am pleased that Dr. Rosenthal elected to release an Android compatible app.
