The Kaaba is a cube-shaped building in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, and is the holiest site in Islam. The Qur'an states that the Ka'bah was built by Abraham (Ibrahim in Arabic), and his son Ismail (Ismaeel in Arabic), after the latter has settled in Arabia. The building has a mosque built around it, Masjid al-Haram. All Muslims around the world face the Ka'bah during prayer, no matter where they are. From any point in the world, the direction facing the Ka'bah is called the Qibla.

One of the Pillars of Islam requires every Muslim to perform the pilgrimage at least once in his lifetime if able to do so. Some parts of the pilgrimage require pilgrims to walk seven times around the Ka'ba in a counterclockwise direction (as seen from above). This Pradaksina, Tawaf, is also performed by pilgrims during the Umrah (small haj). However, the most dramatic time during the Hajj, when about 6 million pilgrims gathered to surround the building on the same day.
