Historians had a general belief that the primitive inhabitants of Sri Lanka and the primitive human being of South India were the same. But the recent excavation has revealed that Sri Lanka's early humans had relations with the people of northern India. Linguistic analysis shows that Sinhalese is associated with language, Gujarati and Sindhi.

Since ancient times Sri Lanka has been ruled by the Shahi Sinhala dynasty. From time to time South Indian dynasties have also been attacked. In the 3rd century BCE, Buddhism came upon the arrival of Mahindra, son of Ashoka's son of Mauryan emperor. Ibnbuttuta visited the island in the fourteenth century.
