About POI Palm Oil Barcode Scanner

POI (Palm Oil Investigations) has launched a Palm oil barcode scanner for Australia and New Zealand products.

POI is a voluntary not for profit organization who have been investigating palm oil content and supply chain certification status in products since March 2013.

A year in the making, POI’s barcode scanner app has been developed to assist concerned consumers identify palm usage in products so that informed purchasing decisions can be made prior to purchase.

POI encourages consumers to support companies using ethical palm oil supply. Boycott is not the answer. Palm oil is here to stay, like it or not. The only chance we have to save the critically endangered species that are facing extinction due to habitat loss for palm oil, is to regulate the industry. The POI palm oil scanner app places power directly into the hands of the consumer. The POI scanner App has all the features and tools required to regulate the industry and its 100% FREE.

Scan the product barcode. Read the palm oil status. Select an alternative ethical product. Send a pre-written email to the company. Hit buy to compile ethical purchasing percentages and share your percentage to social media so you can show how you are making a difference.

Around 40% of products on supermarket shelves contain palm oil. Palm oil is a common ingredient in food (Biscuits, bakery items, Ice Cream, Chocolate, Confectionery, Crisps, Margarine, Health food bars, Cereals) etc. Derivatives of the oil are common in personal care products (Shampoo, Conditioner, Soaps, Skin care, Toothpaste) as well as household cleaning and detergents.

Rarely labelled by its correct name, palm oil is the hidden ingredient. There are over 200 names for palm oil its derivatives, the most common is the generic term vegetable oil. Other common names used in food production are emulsifier 471 and humectant glycerol.

Oil palm is a high yielding and versatile crop which only produces fruit when grown 10 degrees north or south of the equator. 87% of world supply is grown in SE Asia; mainly on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo which is the only place on earth where orangutans, elephants, tigers, rhino’s co-exist in the wild. Habitat loss for palm oil is driving these critically endangered species toward extinction.

Palm Oil is the cheapest of vegetable oils. Due to high demand, virgin rainforests in Sumatra and Borneo are being decimated at an alarming rate. Large areas of tropical forests and other ecosystems with high conservation values have been cleared to make room for oil palm plantations, essentially killing the biodiversity of the ecosystems that they replace.

The app is great but it would be better if contributing was easier. i.e. If we could just take some photos of the product in the app and send them via the app.

Just need to add more to the database! But amazing app!

Q70%

Really needs more in database. But cool app

Q70%

Needs integration for adding new products rather than having to do that separately. Scanner works fine for me have scanned many products. The sending of email complaint to businesses works great.

Q70%
by Q####:

Camera doesn't focus, why can't I enter barcodes manually to circumvent this? Database appears to have many many idiotic things like plastic wrap DISPENSERS for goodness sake..

Q70%
by Q####:

Camera doesn't focus nor does it scan anything. How long do I have to hold to a bar code to scan it there should be a countdown or something?

V70%
by V####:

Great app. Let's hope that sooner rather than later we will no longer need it after all governments and companies ban unsustainable palm oil and enforce transparent food labelling... Hahahhahah. Yeh I think this will be around for a while. Probably longer than orang-utans, Asian rhino, tigers, humans..... And so on.

I love that this app makes it so easy to identify palm oil, but wish there was a feature to submit unknown products. It would make it much easier to contribute.

Works really well on my Fairphone. Some products are not in the database, but there's an option to send in photos of the ingredients list & barcode & a product photo to help expand the range.

X70%
by X####:

It seems as though most people would agree it's a great idea. I think the problem is so far I haven't scanned anything that works. Sure it will take a while lot of time to get a huge database of every barcode, instead of having to take a photo and list the ingredients, etc can it be done all in app? When you scan and it says, not found use the same barcode, have an option to take a photo of the ingredients and the product and send it from there, not having to go through the process of leaving the app.

I love the concept of this app. I hope I can give it 5 stars some day soon, but almost nothing in my house was in the database. Developers, please add a button to snap and send in pics of products! I have Green Palm sustainable products at home to add to the database.
