ASME Impact Test Requirement

The ASME Impact Test Requirement provides you with information about impact test requirements in pressure vessel design and construction. Based on the ASME impact test requirement, you need to make assessment to see that either your pressure vessel is exempted from impact testing, or you need to carry out the test. Carbon Steel and Low Alloy steels are divided into 4 groups:
(A) high risk to (D) low risk:

(A) Materials with low toughness or materials that do not fit into the other groups.
(B) Most materials fit into this group
(C) Low strength materials
(D) Tough fine grain steels

As thickness increases, the risk of brittle fracture increases; therefore the temperature before impacts tests are required must get warmer. This is the basis of Div.1 Fig UCS 66 or Div2. Fig. 3.7 & Fig. 3.8, which plots each material group between MDMT (Minimum Design Metal Temperature) and thickness. If the required MDMT falls below the appropriate material curve (A to D), Impact testing is mandatory.

This app calculates MDMT for material curve (A to D) as per ASME Section VIII Division 1, UCS-66 and ASME Section VIII Division 2, Figure 3.7 and Figure 3.8.
