Documentado desde el siglo XI, fue propiedad realenga de varios Reyes Castellano-Leoneses (Alfonso VII, Alfonso VIII, Alfonso IX, Fernando III " El Santo", Alfonso X "El Sabio", Sancho IV "El Bravo", Alfonso XI, Pedro I "El Cruel", Enrique II de Trastámara, etc).

El castillo de Curiel de Duero, constituyó dote matrimonial de Leonor Plantagenet, la Infanta Estefanía, Doña Berenguela "La Grande", Doña Violante, etc. Durante cerca de dos siglos fue prisión de nobles y reyes y entre sus muros estuvieron retenidos Jaime IV de Mallorca, el Infante Don Juan, el Conde Pembroke, Diego de Castilla (hijo de Pedro I) prisionero en Curiel durante 54 años (desde los 11 a los 64 años en que fue liberado y trasladado a Coca) y sus piedras han sido testigos presenciales de las gestas de las reconquista al Islam del valle del Duero y la repoblación del mismo durante los siglos IX a XI.

Situado en una roca sobre un cerro, a 927 metros de altura, era prácticamente inexpugnable; aún hoy su imagen sobrecoge a quién lo visita si piensa en cómo pudo construirse en ese lugar, y el esfuerzo que ha supuesto recuperar de una inevitable pérdida sus históricas ruinas. En el interior del recinto se ha edificado un lujoso complejo hotelero de 23 habitaciones y suites, salones, restaurante, comedores para banquetes, salas de conferencias, salas de música, piscina y solarium en las almenas.
