About Toronto Cycling

Track your rides with GPS and help the City improve current cycling infrastructure and plan for future cycling investment! Trip information including purpose, route, date and time will be analyzed to assist in determining high demand corridors used by cyclists, identifying neighbourhood links and getting a better sense of how cyclists adapt to changes to cycling infrastructure over time.

The data collected will be used as part of the data analysis and public participation component as the City develops an update to the Toronto Bike Plan.

Users can cancel a trip at any time and route information will not be transmitted unless explicitly directed by the user.

Easily track your cycling trip!
- GPS Route Mapping
- Real-time stats: duration, distance and average speed throughout a trip

Be advised that continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life. Trips are auto-terminated after 30 minutes when not moving to reduce this.

Workaround for crashing on launch (Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge with Android 6.0.1): Don't restart it from the Android desktop as it will just crash again. Instead after it crashes pull down the app. switcher and you will find it is still running. Switch to it and it will then work normally and will continue to until terminated by quitting or rebooting the device.

This app worked perfectly since it's launch. Since upgrading to the new Nexus though it won't work. Haven't been able to record once. Please fix.

The app worked beautifully for a year. Then I reinstalled it and it never worked. I got a security notice from Norton that my privacy was being compromised and the app was sending info to the US. I uninstalled the app.

(Android) It's crashed all but once on me. Not much more I can say.

Decent minimal implementation. Does what it says on the tin. Or did. Since the latest update no trips have been successfully logged; the timer starts but when I get to my destination and check my Nexus 7 (to end the trip) it's back at the opening choices or with a zeroed timer that starts up again. Update: with patience I get about one trip in three to register. Hope the limited sampling does help the City.

The app is simple to use and produces useful data for city planning - data that in the long run will benefit me and other cyclists. Beyond that, it even produce a ride map of my own trips, some stats and gives me the BikesSHare station map without having to install another app. I rate it 5 star, but this rider only deserves 2 stars since he has trouble starting the app at the beginning of a ride and not in the middle of it...

Great bike tracker for a good cause. I understand the need for a city-specific app. Uptake could likely be improved by integrating 'post to' or 'share to' functions or other more social/points interactions.

N70%
by N####:

I like the idea, but I had to uninstall it, as I cannot run two mapping/tracker apps in parallel. I would still like to contribute by linking my tracker app (I use Runtastic, but Strava/iCardio/etc. could also Feed map/speed info here) to provide the city with valuable statistics. Please make the leap to connect to these apps, for the vast majority of the bikers who use them!

Nice app and easy to use. Basic in terms of features but reliable. Hopefully the city is able to use this data to effectively draw up plans and policy. A social media sharing function would be helpful in spreading the word.

No biking trails on the map. What's the point of the app?

M70%
by M####:

The app works nice and is very stable. Only thing missing is you can't export trips to gpx, so if you want to keep track of your bike ride in another app you have to record with both. Also, when you switch to a different phone all your trips are gone

M70%
by M####:

I'm really happy with this. Sure, it's pretty basic (it's not Strava), but the data goes straight to the city and feeds infrastructure decisions, so I think it's important to use. After seeing this data presented at a city meeting last night I'm sold on using it as much as possible: they really do look at the data from this app. I do wish it had a data export option.

J70%
by J####:

Good app for taking trips and don't key items.. Parks, bike share, etc. . However... It's missing the one thing the city should do better than any private app... Adding info on all bike lanes, paths, sharrows, etc. . Really wish v2.0 had that layer added to the maps

L70%

What is the point of a city cycling app without the city cycling routes?

M70%
by M####:

This app runs nicely and is great for tracking stats on rides. Two suggestions for improvement: add elevation calculation (and factor that into the calories burned), and show more clearly the cycle paths/bike lanes on the map rather than just general traffic.

S70%

I'd love to import rides from strava - i won't use 2 ride tracking apps at the same time. Strava records way more metrics on training rides.

They added a "are you sure you want to discard" dialogue, saved my life. Increased from 3 star. Occasionally doesn't record any data points, when I get to my destination it only has 4 points... I still submit hoping they see that pollution data.

The only reason why I use this app is to have just a tiny bit of impact on cycling policy in Toronto. With that said, it's a very basic location app that doesn't really do anything more than My Tracks, except that there is no option to backup trip data - a huge miss since I had to switch from My Tracks in order to use this app. I've had to reinstall the app after updating the phone OS, and was very sad to have to part ways with the aggregated stats on my bike use :_(

I used this in the summer in the hope that it helps inform cycling policy. However the most recent update is unstable on my phone (Galaxy S2) and crashes almost immediately upon launching.

If the GPS doesn't lock immediately after starting a trip, it ends up reporting time/speed wrong; Should track two start times - one for user hitting start, and one for GPS lock. Should scrub data until the first (from the last) intersection so that privacy is improved; toronto star is sure to file a foi for the data.

I really like the concept behind this app. And it's quite well executed. However I rarely use this app. Unless I know there will be an opportunity to recharge at the other end of the ride, I just can't. My phone will usually make it through a full day on a charge. But after recording a 14km ride, my phone died mid afternoon. I'd like the ability to submit gpx data collected through my GPS unit since it can record all day without running out of steam.

by N####:

Let me start by saying that I bike a lot for transportation and love biking around Toronto. Preliminary use took too much battery and time to use this regularly (the idea behind the app.) Short 2 km trips took 10% of the phones battery and I regularly bike 20+ km many days. I want to give the data if it means better cycling infrastructure but not if it means a dead battery! Too bad it couldn't come as a plug in on Moves.

Providing data to help the city identify bicycle usage is a great idea, unfortunately it's super buggy on my Sony Xperia TL. Still I'll keep using it for now.

Original version caused a crash on my HTC panach. Bell function shuts down my FM tuner: that's bad.

This app is great for improving cycling infrastructure in the city; there are definitely some bugs though, recently I am getting 0km rides that also do not generate a map. When I use map view it correctly shows my position. I guess I'm worried that my lack of data is defeating the purpose of the app.

It may be functional but the layout is horrible,. Many text labels overlap and make it hard them hard to read. Many more users Strava, so it would be a great idea to offer a feature for Strava users to upload their GPX (a common GPS data format for recording routes) and fill out the city's survey on each upload. Samsung Galaxy S3. On the "trips" list, the date and time of the trip overlaps the comments of the trip. Also when selecting "View map: on the map layout, the date and time overlaps the comments of the trip when viewing in portrait mode.

Attractive design and seems like a useful idea. I wish I could export Strava or Garmin Connect data however as I've been using those for commutes for years and don't want to pay attention to running one more thing. What kills this though is it rings a bicycle bell at a 5 minute interval. It stops the audiobook I'm trying to listen to while peddling on the lake shore trail.

N70%

The app works well and I think this is a great idea. However it seems to clip off the beginning of my trip. I'll start a trip, get off the bike and finish the trip, and the distance is always short by about a km. It shows on the map that my trip started well into my commute, but ends correctly where I said it did. Note: this is after only two commutes, but both were off. Thanks

Strava already did this. The city deserves idiot of the year award for this.... Strava released this data already!

Why is the City of Toronto not using data from Strava?

N70%

Please add option in settings to disable the 30 minute inactivity time limit. I find it annoying to have trips auto-terminate when I'm running errands.

The app has been working great for me. Not only is it cool to know how far I've ridden and my speed, the greenhouse gas offset estimate is neat. I actually go out of my way to use existing cycling infrastructure, so I hope it's taken into consideration that more direct routes with bike lanes would be appreciated. Finally, I wish there was a different notification sound. Every time the notification goes off I think someone is riding up behind me and ringing their bell! Oh, also, sometimes I forget to start the app...a widget would be helpful!

N70%
by N####:

The app records the metrics it states, it also rings a bell and stops whatever you're listening to whenever a reminder from this app is played. Still not fixed.

I'm so happy to use this app to help improve future biking in the city. Getting the stats at the end of my ride is really fun too! However, I think the calorie counter is really off and needs to be tweaked a bit. It would also be nice if it took into account riding uphill vs downhill.
