A note about Hindu Calendar & Panchang:
Traditionally, the English calendar which is followed across the world is based on the movements of the Earth with respect to the Sun. According to the English calendar every day lasts 24 hours representing one rotation of the Earth on its axis.
However, ancient vedic practices differ from English methods significantly. The Hindu Calendar or Panchang is constructed based on the movements of the Moon. The word ‘Panchang’ literallay translates to ‘five limbs’ and refers to the five attributes of Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana & Var. Of these five, the first three – Tithi & Nakshatra – are the most important are believed to significantly influence the outcome of human actions.
‘Tithi’ is analogous to a ‘day’ in the English Calendar and measures the time for the angle between the sun and the moon to change by 12 degrees. Unlike days in the English calendar which are of a standard 24 hour length, the hourly length of a Tithi might vary significantly.
‘Nakshatra’ represents the astrological sign in which the moon is located at a given point of time. There are 27 Nakshatras in total each account for an angular increase of 13 degrees and 20 minutes in the movement of the Moon.
