12ª RM - Exército Brasileiro

Há mais de meio século, precisamente em 15 de julho de 1948, o então Ministério da Guerra criou o Comando de Elementos de Fronteira, nesta cidade de Manaus, por transformação do Comando dos Destacamentos de Fronteira, com jurisdição sobre os Estados do Pará e Amazonas e os Territórios do Acre, Amapá, Rondônia e Roraima. Com o crescimento da prioridade atribuída à área, foi criado em Belém o Comando Militar da Amazônia e, em 1969, transferido para Manaus reunindo-se a este Comando da 12ª Região Militar, então criada.

Treze anos mais tarde, separada do CMA, a 12ª RM, estabelecida como Grande Comando independente, iniciou a busca de uma denominação histórica à altura de sua importância. O Capitão-General Francisco Xavier de Mendonça Furtado, antigo governante da então província do Grão-Pará, em meados do século XVIII, percorreu vasta extensão da Capitania, incorporando novas comunidades, fundando vilas, integrando o território, realizando a política de povoamento e garantindo a posse da terra, por meio da doutrina do utis possidetis, bem como do desenvolvimento de atividades econômicas que interiorizaram o homem nesta imensa região.

A conjunção de seus esforços, particularmente nos campos político e econômico, resultou na expansão da fronteira norte do Brasil e na atual configuração do Estado do Amazonas, razão pela qual, numa justa homenagem, foi concedida à 12ª Região Militar a denominação histórica de "REGIÃO MENDONÇA FURTADO", pela Portaria Ministerial Nr 687, de 16 de dezembro de 1993. Na estrutura militar de paz tem, como principais encargos, comando, planejamento e execução do apoio às Organizações Militares de sua área, bem como o planejamento do preparo e da execução da mobilização e das atividades ligadas ao equipamento do território.
