About Frogs of Southern Africa

Frogs of Southern Africa is a beautiful and authoritative app authored by zoology professor Louis du Preez and environmental consultant Vincent Carruthers. It is the definitive guide to frog identification in southern Africa and is suitable for nature lovers of all experience levels.

Intuitive and accessible, the app introduces the user to all 160 frog species in the region. The species, with their tadpole stages, are comprehensively described, covering conservation status, calls, distribution maps, habits, habitats and key ID points. Full-colour photographs and high-definition videos show behaviour, mating, habitat and calls.

The genera are also fully described and illustrated, and a 'distinctive characters' feature provides key information at a glance.

Spatial data and a simple identification key help to narrow down search results, increasing the chance of accurately identifying these secretive and often cryptic creatures.

This app is suitable for all nature lovers, amateur froggers, students and professional scientists.

** This app requires a further 560MB download after installation. **

What a fantastic app! Du Preez' presentation at HAA 2017 convinced me to try it out. Works brilliantly and allows you to leave your heavy field guides at home. The submit to ADU feature is great. I think the most useful feature of all is the comprehensive list of calls available to the user.

I installed it twice now on my Samsung Galaxy tablet 10.1 and every time when opening it complains about Permissions: Please Ensure you have allowed all permissions for this app. I can ONLY press cancel that throws me out. I really would like to use it on my tablet. I am running Android 4.04. It works OK on my cell phone, but do believe it is better designed for a tablet. I have seen it working and do believe it a GREAT APP, once it is working.

Very useful app, all the required information you need is available. But is in need of an update. Some if the scientific names have changed

Absolutely the best amphibian resource for the region. Up to date with latest developments in taxonomy. This is by far the best wildlife app I know of and other developers should look and learn from this one... Highly recommended!

It WAS an excellent app. Since the last update AND I validated everything the app won't open and says I need to restart it and validate it. On Android 6.0.1 I can't even write to the developers

This is going to be fantastic for my herping trips - I love that there are videos for many of the species in addition to the calls. One thing though - when adding entries on one's own sightings, it would be great to be able to add photos of the individuals instead of just filling in info and comments.

This app is incredible. It's basically an updated version of the book BUT with all new digital content. Multiple adult and tadpole images per species showcases their variability which helps tremendously with identification. Song recordings and high quality video of behaviour further help with identification. Finally, the smart funtion that uses your location to predict the species present in your area is just great if you're looking to narrow down your search or simply want to see what species are around.
