GI means glycemic index. It is a number associated with a particular type of food to indicate the food's effect on a person's blood glucose (blood sugar) level.

The Glycemic Load (GL) of food is a number that estimates how much the food will raise a person's blood glucose level after eating it.

Because GL is related to the food's effect on blood sugar, low-GL meals are often recommended for diabetic control and weight loss.

Did you know that recent studies from the Harvard School of Public Health indicate that the risks of diseases such as type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease are strongly related to the GI of the overall diet. In 1999, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) recommended that people in industrialised countries base their diets on low-GI foods in order to prevent the most common diseases of affluence, such as coronary heart disease, diabetes and obesity.

The Glycemic load appears to be a significant factor in dietary programs targeting metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, and weight loss; studies have shown that sustained spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels may lead to increased diabetes risk. The Shanghai Women's Health Study concluded that women whose diets had the highest glycemic index were 21 percent more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than women whose diets had the lowest glycemic index. For diabetics, glycemic load is a highly recommended tool for managing blood sugar.

What is a low carb diet?
Low-carbohydrate diets or low-carb diets are dietary programs that restrict carbohydrate consumption, often for the treatment of obesity or diabetes. Low-carbohydrate diets are used to treat or prevent some chronic diseases and conditions, including cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

A low-GI food releases glucose more slowly and steadily, which leads to more satisfactory blood glucose readings after meals. A high-GI food causes a more rapid rise in blood glucose levels; this is best for energy recovery after exercise or for a person experiencing hypoglycemia.

I imagine creating an app like this is very time consuming, so I greatly respect and appreciate the amount of effort that went into it. I think in time, it can only get better. Once I figure out how to use it, I found it totally acceptable for what I need. I feel like this app will help me to learn how to make better choices to reduce my pre-diabetic symptoms. Thank you!

Nice that it has index but dev shouldn't list as "free app" only to require pay for a basic eature like glycemic load... misleading. Wasted my time, instant delete.

X70%
by X####:

Free should mean free, not that you have to pay for nesessary features. Very deceptive. Tutorials are not sufficient to help you understand how the functions work. If I find a better app I will uninstall this one.

World of infomation! I have diabetes and CKD. Lowering carbs and knowing their effects on blood sugar is not only essential but critical to my survival. This app, when purchasing the full options, has about everything you need to succeed.

I have type 1 diabetes and recently started insulin pump therapy. This app will be a great help to my glucose control. I also love how simple and uncluttered the app looks :)

Not clear from description that the only free part of the food lists is the GI- have to pay to see carbs and load. No way to know if the item i looked up is the type i use- for example i drink unsweetened almond milk, almond milk is on the list but no indication whether the one they listed means sweetened or unsweetened. So ifc i havd to go scouring tbe internet with e very single lookup, why bother with this app? I downloaded looking for something to give me a quick lookup capability but this ill only make the process more frustrating if anything. Just LoVed seeing the develooer argue with half the reviewers. One man it was about a comment about basic foods like egg not being on the list.... a way to solve the ( well it doesnt have a gi so no point putting it on the list) problem, is to add basic foods to the list and give them a gi of zero. Most people wanting to download apps like this are new to the diabetes or glycemic index game and are looking to learn by seeing that info where carbs and sugars are hiding in everyday foods where we may not have realised. Adding no gi basic foods would make the list more complete and more useful.

Its ok. Needs more food items added to the database. And free app should mean free, not have to pay for additional features.

Wonderful app. Glycemic effect is really more important than merely low carb. Why? Because, some low carb foods are somewhat high on the GI. This app helps me choose the very best low GI/low carb foods. Bravo!!

After buying needed features my food table speaks different language that I want, and list of favourite products is always coming back to stuff I didn't choose and which I even don't eat!

No wholemeal or granary breads shown. Surprisingly heavy on battery - most likely due to the long lists requiring heavy CPU usage when navigating.
