Use offline topo maps and GPS on hike trails without cell service! The GPS in your Android phone can get its position from satellites, and you don’t have to rely on your data plan to get maps. Have more fun and safe GPS adventures in the backcountry.
Preload FREE offline topo maps, aerial photos, and road maps on your storage memory, so they are ready when you need them.
Add custom GPS waypoints in longitude and latitude, UTM or MGRS grid reference. Import GPS waypoints from GPX files. Choose icons for waypoints much like in MapSource. (This app uses the WGS84 datum, NAD27 is available in settings).
Use GPS for hunting a waypoint or geocache, for recording tracks and GPS waypoints on your trip, all the while tracking your quest on topographic maps.
About topo (topographic) maps: Topo maps show terrain through color and contours, and are useful for navigation offroad. Topo maps and GPS can be used for hiking, hunting, kayaking, snowshoeing, & backpacker trails.
The app has many built in map sources and allows you to create your own maps with Mobile Atlas Creator. Built in sources include:
OpenStreetMaps and NASA landsat data worldwide.
OpenCyle Maps are topo maps that show terrain worldwide.
USGS Color Aerial photography.
Topographic Maps of Spain and Italy.
Outdoor maps of Germany and Austria
Topo maps of New Zealand
Here are some of the outdoor GPS activities BackCountry Navigator has been used for:
Hiking both on hiking trails and off trail.
Camping, to find the perfect camping site or the way back to camp.
Hunting trips for hunting wild game in rugged areas, including recon for the hunt.
Bait fishing or fly fishing with a buddy.
Search and Rescue (SAR) with GPS.
Kayak and canoe trips on inland lakes and streams or marine, coastal waters.
Backpacker trips: using topo maps of wilderness areas and national forests to navigate on trails with the GPS.
Snow adventures including snowmobiling, skiing (alpine or cross country) and snowshoeing. Create a memory. Map it out.
This a great addition to the outdoor gear you bought at Cabelas, REI, or another outdoor store. Your android phone could substitute for a Garmin or Magellan outdoor handheld GPS! You storage has memory for maps.
Find your own ways to have fun in the outdoors. Be a maverick by venturing into new territory beyond cell service boundaries. Become a pro at navigation with GPS.
BackCountry Navigator has been previously available on WM devices and preloaded on the Trimble Nomad outdoor rugged device. This Android version is more flexible, featured, and fun.
Used it on my son's hunting trip and the downloaded maps wouldn't work. Bought the pro version and it worked well. I like a lot of the features, a few things like a measure icon, yards and feet for units, night mode, etc. would help improve user interaction. These could be non-default options to modify in settings. Interface will take some getting used to.
I've been looking for an app for use when off roading this being the demo version seems pretty good considering its free. I'm yet to try it whilst green laning but if it runs smoothly I will purchase the full app as it's under £10 for all os maps of the UK. Any other app I've tried will cost a small fortune for that. Definitely worth downloading!
I use this every walk that I take in combination with a physical compass. Eventually I'll buy it, but have used the demo for over a year. Which tells you how functional this demo is. Highly recommended.
Can't do anything unless you pay to upgrade
Have two or three programs like this I my phone, always seem to use this one
Light and legible
Maps have a good level of detail and are very helpful. Thanks to the developers.
Wish this app supported Samsung Gear S3
The downloaded area does not load it shows gray areas with some icon, (map-package) or white squares (not stored). The app looks nice though because of this I am sceptical to purchase the full version.
Shame it didn't have Victorian maps
Update: It would not allow me to download anything, the message told me it required the paid version to access any download I selected. Paid app works fairly well but could not get the free app to work off the grid by downloading in advance (for areas of no service). Updated to a 3 assuming this is uncommon. Tried to use a basic download for a local area and the app showed nothing but Pro features required for every download. No point in having a free version to try out.
After using the demo version here and there for the past year, I finally realized how valuable it was when my son and I started doing monthly 2 night backpacking trips. I finally broke down and paid, and it is worth every cent.
App wouldn't load maps...scrambled letters showed up instead ...I did get the paid version..so it's frustrating
The demo will not let me see a map if I can see a map I damn sure not going to pay 12 dollars for it I want to try it first
It was just poor, i couldnt get uk os maps to work
So satisfied, I bought it!
Good app, good maps plus measuring part is awesome
So nice containing all what I need and more ..... Thank you..
Not gone Let them catch me no. Midknight writer.?!
Complicated to use.
I tested a number of these apps before purchasing. This is s good value. This is the only app I have ever purchased. Works great in the woods.
Same as google map in such way
I've used Garmin GPSs since the first ones in the the early 1990s. This app should be a wake-up call to Garmin as it is far better than Garmin's efforts in the past 5-8 years. It's main advantage beyond good software and interface is a wide choice of screen size from a range of devices available on the market. The downside is the fragility of the devices you might use it on. A cell phone is not a good field device for professional use (geology, forestry, fisheries, guiding...) or serious use in the backcountry. Non waterproof or non shockproof devices make me reluctant to use it as my primary GPS. I would encourage the developers to get into the hardware side of this market with a large screen, waterproof, rubberized device with bluetooth data transfer. They could put Garmin out of business.
Dont want an ad taking up 1/3 of the screen
Used demo for 90 days. No problems, in heavy timber wilderness areas around southern continental divide. Easy downloads for maps, quick scrolling around. Marking of way points and tracking are easy. Low battery use in airplane mode just using gps. I have 2yr 3 month old Samsung s5. Two day use battery down to 33%. Now buying paid version to get access to other maps for next hunting season.
Finally just updated to the pro version after almost a year of using the demo. I am very pleased with how well this works.
Worked well for me in the woods where there was no cell service. Had to do a lot of hiking in the dark for a week and it made my life much easier.
Best Hunting Map to date:)
This app takes ice fishing to a whole new level.!!!!!!
Great app, allows multiple map views
I tried this as a last minute download before going out scouting to set deer stands. The app performed well. My cell service was a bit shoddy and I could not get the topo maps to upload while in the woods, but the app tracked my route well. Next up, duck hunting trips.
I've been using this app for hunting in the backcountry in very hilly area with deep ravines.I used this app to find a waypoint deep in the middle of the big woods. when I found that my cursor was right over the pin( put there 6 weeks ago, I looked up and there was a tree that I had marked and I was deep in the backcountry., the reason I purchased the app is because if the demo version was that accurate , then I'm going to do the" right thing".thx all!!
I had the demo version for over a year and just kept forgetting to upgrade. I have the paid version now and it is even more helpful. I love never being lost. I am not an avid adventurer but feel more comfortable leaving the beaten path with this tool. Get the app you will not be disappointed.
Location was sort of nearby. Not easy to change map. Poor design.
Could not change to km. So no good for me.
I have used this app like a gps to go to property lines. Topo is very useful too!
Had no clue where the map put me
Using it to help write a hiking guidebook in the Pacific Northwest
Worked when I least expected! Novice user.
Only reason this didn't get five stars is the bug in the max zoom on the download feature. Set it to 15 (max) and the highest you can go to is 14. Probably will be fixed in a new version though.
