About The Photographer's Ephemeris

The Photographer's Ephemeris (TPE) helps to plan outdoor photography shoots.

TPE is a map-centric sun and moon calculator: see how the light will fall on the land, be it day or night, for almost anywhere on earth. Our Android app provides all the basic functionality you need to plan sun and moon photography.

Ideal for landscape, nature, travel and outdoor photographers, TPE's map-based approach means you can search for any place name on the planet or position the map pin exactly where you want it.

Advanced features include: automatic time zone and elevation detection, correction for atmospheric refraction and height above the horizon. You can even determine when the sun or moon will be visible from behind nearby hills and mountains.

Five map types are offered, including two topographic maps, ideal for landscape and nature photographers. Open Street Map and Open Cycle Map Topographic offer automatic offline support: any tiles you view are automatically cached for offline use.

Key features:

- Time and direction of sunrise and sunset
- Time and direction of moonrise and moonset
- Phase of the moon and % illumination
- Times of civil, nautical and astronomical twilight
- Graphical display on a map (Standard, Satellite/Hybrid, Terrain, Open Street Map, Open Cycle Map Topographic)
- Rotate and tilt the map for the optimal view
- Compass-based auto-rotation of the map
- Movable map pins - drag and drop the pin exactly where you need it
- Search for locations by place name or enter coordinates directly
- Save any location you want - no fixed lists
- All features available in both portrait and landscape mode
- Does not require network connection for rise/set time, azimuths and sun/moon position

Advanced features:

- Automatic time zone detection for any location on earth
- Determines elevation above sea level
- View azimuth and altitude of sun/moon for any time of day/night
- Distance, bearing and elevation angle between any two points
- Import and export locations to/from KML
- Offline use with Open Street Map and Open Cycle Map Topographic maps
- Light pollution map overlay

Geek features:

- Find when the sun/moon will appear from behind a hill
- Compensation for atmospheric refraction
- Compensation for elevation above the horizon

Note:
- This app has a limited feature set relative to its iOS equivalent: please review this listing carefully to ensure that the features you need are included prior to purchasing
- Maps and elevation-based calculations require a data connection to function (execpt for Open Street Map and Open Cycle Map Topographic, which are cached to your device automatically)
- Locations outside ±80° latitude (very far north and south) are unsupported
- Map auto-rotate requires a compatible device (with magnetometer and accelerometer)
- Requires that you have Google Play Services and Google Maps installed on your device. Most devices already have both installed. TPE will prompt you to install these if they are missing.

End user license agreement: http://photoephemeris.com/android-eula

Please visit http://photoephemeris.com/support#android_support if you have any trouble installing Google Play Services.

TPE for desktop has been a favorite of photographers around the world for years. Now you can carry it with you.

Bought this on a friend's recommendation, but he uses an iPhone. I wish I had seen Sun Surveyor before the two-hour return period was up on this relatively poor app. I'm glad it was only $3.

It's utility compared to ios isn't even comparable. Very disappointed in this app. Skyfire needs to come to android

Only 2 stars. Trouble with some developers is that they are such Apple fanboys that they have blinkers on and don't see the other 90% of mobile users that are on Android. After all only 'real' photographers only use Apple gear right? iPhone and Macbook pros.

T70%
by T####:

Somewhat underwhelmed. Fortunately, the comment section here pointed me in the direction of several other apps . Refunding now to purchase sun surveyor

A very poor showing of an app when compared to the functionality on iOS. While not entirely useless, when compared to what the Photo pills guys produced, this is a pretty ridiculous showing... TPE used to be my primary planning app when I had iPhone; now I use photopills exclusively. Why skyfire 'partnered' with these guys stays a mystery to me...

T70%
by T####:

Disappointed doesn't come close to the way feel about the developers of this app still no skyfire on the android platform all we are getting is empty promises of it arriving which it hasn't and now there's a new 3d version coming out and again no android version. And has everyone noticed that they never respond to anyone's comments very very poor customer service. I would respect them more if they were honest will the android community and admit they've got no plans for adding extras for the droid version.

I downloaded the app to use for night photography and am a bit saddended to not see the night mode as it is available in the iOS version. Are there plans to port this to the android build?

Very handy both for planning future shoots and in the field! Wouldn't be without it.

X70%

This app is outdated on android, it needs to catch up with his version for the iPhone, also now are better alternatives apps out there, don't worth the price right now

T70%
by T####:

A few years ago TPE was one of a kind. Now it is kind of meh, particularly on a phone. Sunsurveyor is a far more useful app to have in the field, particularly when you don't have a data connection. And the new light pollution map does not add much value as it forces you to view the map at a very low zoom.

T70%
by T####:

I love this app for planning sunrise/sunset shots as well as occasional moonrise shots. IME it's been very accurate. Definitely an app with having! Oh and the new light pollution overlay is fantastic. Love it.

T70%

This app is not worth the price, don't down load it. You can't do much with it. All I can get the app to do is tell me where the sun and moon rising/setting are at else it just displays some info. This app should be free for what you get out of it.

Why is the Android app lacking so much compared to the iOS version? We hasn't night mode been added yet? I quickly regret my purchase after using it for 5 minutes..

I did a lot of research when it came to the best photography apps. It was recommended in numerous forums and photography groups online. Once I downloaded it I saw some use for it but was very confused as to why so many people raved about this app. It wasn't until I grabbed my wife's iPad and downloaded it there that I realize what was missing. The app has so much more functionality on ios. I've sent numerous messages asking when skyfire would release for android. It seems support has ended for android.

Looks like they have no plans to enhance or support TPE on Android. When Skyfire when on Beta, I joined it back in July. My trial expired in a month and multiple emails to support went unanswered. Looks like it's been mothballed.

Way out of date interface. Anyone rating higher then 3 hasn't used the ios version. It's missing a ton of features especially the sunset/subrise predictor skyfire.

This is awesome, works perfectly. I initially did not realize that the GPS-button in the top right corner is a toggle, which causes it to track your location, rather than just centering on you once. When the tracking is turned on you cannot pan or zoom as it returns to you all the time. I sent an email query about this and promptly got a friendly explanation of the working of the GUI (duh). I am rating it a resounding 5 stars.

I have used the TPE programs for several years (Desktop and Android). They are both great products, but the mobile app gives you the flexibility anywhere you go. It is an excellent planning tool. Hopefully, Skyfire will one day make it to the Android platform. Originally, I was unable to import my KML locations. I exported the KML file from the TPE desktop app. Once in the TPE Android app, I attempted to search for the KML, but the app will not allow me to look in the desired location. I tried to explore on the phone to locations available in the app, but those locations are hidden in the phone's filing system. The issue is in the device for the TPE application permissions. You have to allow TPE to access the devices storage. Once this is done, it looks in the Downloads folder by default. com.crookneckconsulting.tpeandroid 1.4.1b79 Device: Verizon SM-G920V (aka Galaxy S6) OS: 6.0.1 REL 23

I'm using the Nexus 6P with Android N . Search function does not work . It says there's an error when searching. I have to locate a place manually. For the price, it should work better

Friends suggested this app who have iOS and I loved the experience on their phones. This android version is lacking in the visual and user UI. Also the lack of sky fire integration as it seems as well.
