بدأت الإمارات بتطبيق نظام جديد للإقامة عام 2014، فرفعت تكاليف الهجرة. يقول المدير في إحدى الشركات الإماراتية جمال معوض إن "وزارة الداخلية تفرض على الراغب في الحصول على الإقامة في الإمارات، القيام بفحوص طبية في بلده كلفتها ما يقارب 500 دولار، وإعادتها فور الدخول إلى الدولة لقاء نحو 250 دولاراً". ويضيف معوض: "بعد التصديق على الفحوص الطبية، يتعين على العاملين في القطاع الحكومي دفع نحو 110 دولارات، والعاملين في القطاع الخاص نحو 150 لطبع الإقامة على الجواز". مشيراً إلى أنه "في العام الأخير بدأت الإمارات بإصدار البطاقة المدنية، التي تتيح للمقيم القيام بجميع معاملاته في الدولة". ويشير إلى أن "الإدارة تفرض أيضاً على الراغبين في إلحاق عائلتهم بهم في البلاد، إجراء الفحوص الطبية عينها لقاء 500 دولار، وإعادتها في الدولة مقابل 250 ثم دفع رسوم تصل إلى 60 دولاراً تقريباً لطباعة الإقامة على جواز السفر".
يذكر أن الإمارات منعت السوريين منذ عام 2012 من دخول البلاد، وفرضت تشدداً على دخول اللبنانيين، بينما تمنع الفلسطينيين من أصحاب وثائق السفر الفلسطينية من الدخول إلى أراضيها.

تُمنح تأشيرات دخول فورية لحاملي جوازات الدول الآتية، من دون حاجة لتأشيرة زيارة مسبقة: أستراليا، اندورا، النمسا، برونوي، بلجيكا، كندا، الدنمارك، فنلندا، فرنسا، ألمانيا، اليونان، هونج كونج، أيسلندا، أيرلندا، إيطاليا، اليابان، ليكتنستاين، لوكسمبورج، ماليزيا، موناكو، هولندا، نيوزيلندا، النرويج، البرتغال، سان مارينو، سنغافورة، كوريا الجنوبية، إسبانيا، السويد، سويسرا، المملكة المتحدة، الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، الفاتيكان، اليابان.
عند وصولك إلى المطار يجب التوجّه إلى قسم الهجرة فيُختم جواز سفرك بتأشيرة لـ ٣٠ يومًا مجاناً، ويمكن التمديد لـ ٣٠ يوماً أخرى مقابل دفع رسوم إضافية.
كما أنّ مواطني دول مجلس التعاون الخليجي لا يحتاجون لتأشيرة لدخول دولة الإمارات. هذه الدول هي: البحرين والكويت وقطر وعُمان والمملكة العربية السعودية. أما المسافرين من الدول غير المذكورة أعلاه، فيجب ترتيب إجراءات الحصول على تأشيرة الدخول قبل السفر. ويمكن فعل ذلك عب التقدم بطلب تأشيرة زيارة لدولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة عبر الانترنت، ودفع الرسوم على الإنترنت. يجب ألا تقل مدة صلاحية جوازات سفر المتقدمين عن ستة اشهر.
أما بالنسبة للتأشيرة السياحية، فهي تمنح للسائحين القادمين من دول غرب وشرق أوروبا، الذين لا تنطبق عليهم شروط الحصول على تأشيرة عند الوصول، بالإضافة إلى الزائرين من تايلاند وجنوب أفريقيا والصين. وتخوّل التأشيرة السياحية لحاملها البقاء مدة 30 يوماً غير قابلة للتجديد. وتتطلب التأشيرة السياحية كفالة من الفنادق والشركات السياحية التي تستضيف مجموعات من السائحين من البلدان المذكورة أعلاه.
