El Libro de Daniel puede ser llamado el Apocalipsis del Antiguo Testamento y es un libro bíblico del Antiguo Testamento y del Tanaj hebreo, que en las biblias cristianas se ubica entre los libros de Ezequiel y Oseas. Es el sexto de los libros proféticos y se lo incluye —por los cristianos— entre los Profetas Mayores (de los cuales es el cuarto, luego de Isaías, Jeremías y Ezequiel).

La profecía de las "setenta semanas" o "setenta sietes", es una de las profecías mesiánicas más importantes y detalladas del antiguo testamento. Se encuentra en Daniel 9. El capítulo comienza con Daniel quien está orando por Israel, reconociendo los pecados de la nación contra Dios y pidiendo su misericordia. Mientras Daniel oraba, el ángel Gabriel se le apareció y le dio una visión sobre el futuro de Israel.
