There were 56 original stories written by Conan Doyle and published in The Strand magazine between 1891 and 1929. The stories are divided among five series. This is from the second series, “The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes”.
One winter night Holmes gives Watson the details of the first case he was ever involved in. Holmes explains that he spent two years at college but never socialized much and only formed a single friendship with a man named Victor Trevor. While visiting Victor’s family in Norfolk, Holmes demonstrated his powers of deduction. At this point Victor told Holmes that he should make deduction into a career and this was the first time Holmes thought of his abilities as anything other than a hobby.
