There were 56 original stories written by Conan Doyle and published in The Strand magazine between 1891 and 1929. The stories are divided among five series. This is from the third series, “The Return of Sherlock Holmes”.
Lord Bellinger, the Prime Minister, and Trelawney Hope, the Secretary of State for European Affairs, come to Holmes in the matter of a document stolen from Hope’s dispatch box. If divulged, this document could bring about very dire consequences for all Europe, even war.
