Limone di Rocca Imperiale

Il limone di Rocca Imperiale è una mutazione spontanea del diffusissimo Limone “Femminello Comune”, meglio conosciuto come limone rifiorente, poiché fiorisce almeno 4 volte all’anno producendo frutti caratteristici per ogni fioritura. Rocca Imperiale è un paese in provincia di Cosenza di circa 3.000 abitanti, bagnato dal Mar Jonio e confinante con la Basilicata.

Le caratteriste pedoclimatiche del territorio hanno favorito la coltivazione di questa pregiata varietà di limone. Il clima, infatti, è mitigato in inverno dalla vicinanza del mare e, essendo le zone interessate alla coltivazione situate ad un’altitudine di circa 200 m, queste sono sottoposte ad escursioni termiche tra giorno e notte che favoriscono la buona colorazione della buccia e l’esaltazione del profumo degli oli essenziali presenti nella stessa. Dalla compresenza di questi fattori ne deriva una varietà eccezionale, sia per il profumo intenso e la succosità si per la facilità con cui si sbuccia.

Altre peculiarità del Limone di Rocca Imperiale, che contribuiscono a distinguerlo dalle altre cultivar, sono il giusto equilibrio tra sostanze aromatiche e acidità del succo e la totale assenza di semi. La maturazione è piuttosto tardiva rispetto alle altre varietà, di solito a Rocca Imperiale viene raccolto tra dicembre e marzo. La coltivazione di questa varietà limone è molto antica, le piante infatti erano già presenti nell’800 nei giardini delle famiglie più abbienti di Rocca Imperiale.
