What are users saying about Datally: mobile data-saving & WiFi app by Google

K70%
by K####:

A) Datally shows data usage highlights and blocks data, two separate things. It needs a VPN to block data, but I myself use my own VPN service, and can't use both VPNs simultaneously (obviously). So, I believe there most be an option in Settings to completely vanish Data Saver feature from the app, leaving more room for monitoring 'Data usage highlights'. B) Datally only shows 'Mobile' data, but *data* is not just mobile data. Having control on Wi-Fi usage is vital!

K70%
by K####:

Needs more features to actually manage data usage. How about I tell you how much I want to use in a specified period of time and then it shows me where I am and forecast my usuage to the end of said period. Now that is useful. Also, show me what apps are using background data specifically and allow me to block it in the app. Please and thank you.

K70%
by K####:

This is an interesting app and it would be much more interesting if more features are added. The thing I would expect to check first is "Time". Sometimes +1 sometimes 0, because when I installed this app it couldn't be installed saying tome is wrong, and when I set time to Automatic, my mobile 's time changed and it s wrong with +1. .. It is also nice knowing the nearest WiFi spots but it s important and helpful to know the very busy WiFi showing it with a color, and the least used WiFi shown in a color to decide which one to use... I noticed also that this app does not show most of nearest WiFi s.. This is just the starting and I am sure this all would perform great.

Good first attempt. Suggestions for improvement: 1) Allow setting of billing period. This is because a lot of us use a data plan with limited monthly quota that resets at a certain date of the month. 2) Allow setting of quota and warning when I'm approaching it. Also, allow adding zero-rated apps that get excluded from the quota.

Installed it but it doesn't seem to open properly. At the top of this page it says apps with usage access but that's it. No other screens available no settings available. You have to leave it open for a few hours to gather information? HTC 10, Android 7.0. Verizon in the US

J70%
by J####:

The user interface is clean, and I like the fact that I can see data usage for all app in one page. One question though, why does the data save needs VPN access? Would it not able to work without it? (I.e. what information is required from the VPN if the app only need to block data traffic of a local app)

O70%
by O####:

Was waiting for something like this. I do not see some of the apps that I installed. Example whatsapp etc. I would like to see all the apps installed on my phone even if it's through apk, to control data usage. Will the data be used on the apps that I turnedoff data, when I attempt to use those apps. This morning when I checked the data it showed recently used data but these apps were blocked, which means it's letting me to use the data.

Data traffic control app want to manage phone and read sms? What can go wrong? upd: SMS has nothing to do with location. As well as Phone. You need location -- request Location permission. Guys, if Google won't respect permission policy no one will. Without explanation and requesting too much you make people blindly accept "permit" in all apps. Stop doing this.

K70%
by K####:

Hello. Wouldn't it great if we can select a custom period. My Postpaid plan starts every 11th of the month and it would be better if I can monitor my data usage within that period, instead of the whole month.

K70%
by K####:

Shows only mobile data usage. No WiFi data usage tracking. Install networx in your PC and implement same on Android. That would be awesome & productive. I want to know everything. Data usage wrt hourly, daily, monthly, yearly, custom (chose date from calander). And app wise as well. BTW networx size is also around 5MB. Thanks.

K70%
by K####:

UPDATE: Your template answer still does not explain why you need to see my SMS messages or phone calls. You can also easily make your app work without those permissions. Enforcing your "all-or-nothing" method makes me very suspicious of your intention. Why do I need to give you permission to view my SMS messages, phone calls and location... Makes no sense for this application. It doesn't really make me feel secured using your application.

H70%
by H####:

This app shouldn't need permissions to make calls and this app doesn't provide any information that your phone already has. Google is trying another way to collect and steal your data. I chuckled when the term data saver is used instead of saying to turn on your wifi. And you lie like a rug. This app shouldn't need permissions to make calls. Without this app I can see how much data my apps are using and my phone automatically finds wifi sites. Remember Google has this built into the wifi? You should be fired for spreading lies

B70%
by B####:

The thing I will improve is before asking the user to give permissions to make phone calls, send text etc. Tell the user why is it going to do so. A naive user will be surprised and even if it's a Google LLC app, the trust is there but also I would expect for it to explain beforehand.

F70%
by F####:

It's simple. The fact that it has a built in VPN is awesome! I think it only tracks mobile data though, but I like tracking WiFi as well. Haven't used it much though. I installed it about 15 minutes ago. If it has WiFi saver/tracker that'd be great.

K70%
by K####:

Thank you for application. But why do you need permissions like SMS and phone calls and location? You asked to give them without any explanation, why not ask them when it need according to your permission policy and best practices

K70%
by K####:

Why does this need so many permissions when similar apps don't? And usage...really? It would be nice if you could at least use the portions of the app that don't use these. A shame to see this all or nothing attitude from Google after they released the runtime permissions.

C70%
by C####:

For those who're fretting about your data being stolen, no it isn't being stolen. Great app by the way! Saved huge amounts of precious mobile data, has the exact features that I wish was bundled into the stock Android data saver. Hopefully this app is supported for long.

K70%
by K####:

Blocked YouTube, but it still can use mobile data. The user interface is confusing, and the constant notifications and popup bubbles are annoying.

K70%
by K####:

What is "Bubble Control"? Feature is grayed out in settings.. app says I "can't use bubble control when accessibility service active". (Edit..looks like Signal Spy's accessibility won't allow me to use the cool bubble) An example of Google cracking down on developers "misusing" the accessibility service?

E70%
by E####:

It's unfair why do I need a VPN service for saving my data VPN increases more data usage. May be this app wanted to monitor traffic. But how can VPN save my data.

K70%
by K####:

This app is exactly what I was looking for, but it turns itself off randomly, not sure how and why. Also what does "Saving mobile data on wifi" mean? You used to be able to turn it off for data or wifi.

M70%
by M####:

Best data saving app till date. Easy GUI. Shows a bit inaccurate but stats close enough. Looking forward for more features like blocking data for specific apps, graph for data usage history, set data limit n more.

X70%
by X####:

Looks promising... Suggestion... * Blacklist feature... Blacklist certain web address * Different data 'block' for each wifi. Ex. I can create profile 'Unlimited fast wifi' and 'slow wifi', 'public wifi'. So, i can have different set of rules. Thank you Google

K70%
by K####:

Why this app requires permission to MAKE and MANAGE phone calls to be able to manage mobile data use? Why this app requires permission to send and View SMS? Please explain me it. How it is connected with measuring data use?

E70%
by E####:

Superrr, es una genial idea para esos problemas que teníamos con los operadores de telefonía ya que era muy díficil saber el momento en que teníamos WiFi desconectado y usábamos los datos sin querer, gracias Google!!

W70%
by W####:

I might give a better rating if you can explain all of the permission requirements in more detail. For example, the reason to read and send SMS messages.

A70%
by A####:

Not a lot of explanation on how this works and what effects this have on apps it is blocking. Will i still get messages from messenging app if i have this turned on? Will apps stop working?

K70%
by K####:

Too many permissions. This app does not need to make calls. No. Plain and simple. Make it work without that permission if you want my experience. Until then, No means NO!

R70%
by R####:

Blocking does not work... I can still able to browse using chrome.

X70%
by X####:

Very useful and easy app for data saving, I wish that all apps were made by Google it will be so amazing because Google make Software and hardware always good.

E70%
by E####:

Beautiful app. Beautifully designed. Please add an option to hide it from notification bar, I really hate to see apps when I want to turn on wifi

K70%
by K####:

Would be great if it could work in background. Yes it works in background but if I exit from datally then data saving isn't available until you open any app.

K70%
by K####:

No landscape support. Works only with mobile data, so useless when using a Wi-Fi connection with a data cap.

X70%
by X####:

Add filters for WiFi, like password protected, no password, distance, etc. Add an option for us to crowd source the wifi and tell whether there's a password or not and then if there is a prompt or not.

K70%
by K####:

A good first try, needs improvements. Developers should look at Huawei's EMUI networked apps. It's important to block background and foreground data per app, on a single screen (mobile and Wi-Fi) Edit: please take in account that blocking background data for spotify, also blocks foreground data. Chrome works as expected.

N70%
by N####:

Great concept of saving data through vpn !! Would love to suggest some features 1.Start date option for those whose plans dont start from 1st of every month. 2.Would be great if datally can automatically switch on data saving mode after the specified amount of data is consumed every day. 3.Also keeping battery performance in mind notifications would be better than floating icons

K70%
by K####:

It will be better that the app also show the remaining data, for example i subscribing 6 GB data for a month, so the app should show me how much data is available with me for the remaining days,

K70%
by K####:

Haven't tried it yet. Please explain why this app need to manage my phone calls and read and send sms?

G70%
by G####:

I usually don't do reviews, but this time I just had to. It is a very handy app for people who use a lot of data and even if you don't there is my favorite feature that allows you to find nearby wi-fi networks and it can tell you if its locked or not. Overall this is one of the best google apps ever!

K70%
by K####:

Since you guys own the Android eco system, could you please implement something like "real time bandwidth control" on per app basis, like what Netlimiter and Netbalancer does on Windows. Eg. If my total bandwidth is 1 mbps 256 kbps for Facebook, 128 for chrome, 400 for YouTube, 200 for gmail. Etc. This is one feature of data managers that is absent since Android 1.0 i think and pretty much doable.
