About Sound Search for Google Play

The Google Play Sound Search widget can help you recognize music and songs playing around you. You can:

-Identify songs, directly from your homescreen
-Purchase identified songs straight from Google Play, and add them to your Play Music library
-Keep a song identification history, synced across all of your Android devices, so you can purchase a song later
-Add the widget directly to your lockscreen, so you can recognize songs even faster (for devices running Android 4.2)

After you’ve installed the Google Play Sound Search widget, go to the widget picker and drag the Sound Search widget onto your homescreen. Click on the widget to start recognizing.

If you're looking for a simple widget to identity music, then this is the widget for you. It is simple and it works. Like all the other apps out there, it doesn't always find everything. If you're looking for a feature filled app, this is not for you. But, lets be honest, the reason you get SoundHound, Shazam or Sound Search is to do one thing and one thing. It is a minimalist widget designed to only identify music and buy it if you wish. One feature I would like to see is the option to play music through All Access for those who are subscribed to it. If that feature is implemented I will happily give it a 5.

There are a few issues. There needs to be an app icon in the drawer. Sometimes if i tag a song multiple times (one immediately after the other) i will get matched to different copies of the same track in the play store. For instance on the original album and then a greatest hits album. It also needs larger matching catalog. Often can't match songs not in database. And lastly a feature request. Lyrics. Either added/embedded directly into the app or play store, or as a link to a third party service.

This has to be the fastest and best music id app I have ever used. I love music and when I hear a song I dont know its usually at the end of the song or in a crowded place and in the past always miss it. But this app has changed all that. I sometimes only need to hold it up for 3 seconds and its done - SONG FOUND! Its great both in low sound and crowded areas. Again, very pleased about Sound Search ^_^

Works very well, I've ditched Shazam. Just needs proper integration for All Access subscribers. If I identify a song it'd be great to be able to go straight to it in the Play Music app (rather than the Play store!). Maybe this could just be an option. It'd also be nice for the track *not* to start playing immediately, most of the time I just want to add it to my library/playlist for listening later!

I use this app regularly and successfully to identify a song playing in my car. The only problem I have is when I've found a song and want to listen to it later. The only way to access the sound history is to open the widget on your phone. I use Google Play Music to listen to songs, but I can't find my sound search history on the internet or on another device. Please add this and ideally integrate it right into the Play Music player.

Widget works great (for quick access). For those of you requesting a separate app, it's not required. This is already built into the Google Search app. Just say "Ok Google" or tap the microphone icon on the search bar/keyboard to start a voice search and don't say anything. If it hears music playing, after about a second a musical note button appears on the bottom right. Tapping that button has the exact same function without having to install this widget, or any app at all for that matter.

I have a nexus 5 and given that I'm on Google Fi I would think it would sync up but something happened in the last few weeks after an update. Now it freezes and I'd have to restart the phone to get but to clear. From the other reviews, seems I'm not the only nexus user having issues. If it's fixed I'll give it 5 stars because this was always faster than the in phone app, SoundHound and shazam.

I used this allll the time on my old phone, now I have the Verizon LG G4 and the request always fails.. It definitely records fine because the audio graph while recording is accurate.. I hope Google fixes this soon, used to be a very useful app!

I have just tried two techhouse tunes with this app and it returned two tracks of completely different tempo! One reggae and Moby's "Ooh Yeah", neither which were correct! Maybe it is good for pop songs, but not for what I need it for. Update: Shazzam just returned "Ooh Yeah" for the same track. maybe they sue the same engine underneath!

This widgets pretty cool it will identify almost any song. Sometimes it doesn't identify a song like for instance "yelawolf and Gucci manes" song what's goodie won't pop up... MAKE SURE U TELL IT TO LISTEN TO THE SONG ATLEAST TWO OR THREE TIMES... IT LIKES TO COME UP WITH A DIFFERENT ANSWER ALMOST ALWAYS AFTER FIRST TRY.... LOL - Brianna

I loved this widget. Was so fast and simple. But now it always says "no network connection" even when every other app is working on 4G LTE. I'm on a Nexus 5x on Republic Wireless. Tried reinstalling and rebooting phone multiple times but nothing. Not sure what is wrong but I would be happy if this app was fixed so that I can use it again.

Haven't tried it yet, but at a few kilobytes it's a no brainer to have it available on all devices. Also going to try out similar big apps these holidays. Reviews seemed swayed more towards Soundhound...so shall see. Shazam needs Google Play Music, which I already use, for purchases of music.

T70%
by T####:

Works great, but it needs to be functional from the "app view" or from atleast a smaller widget. Currently the app view is only for viewing history and doesn't allow further sound searching (why?!?). Also, would be great if there was a tiny widget option (1x1) that simply launched the app and automatically started listening.

Is there any way to call up Google's "Sound Search" function (which is only available as a widget) without actually having to place the widget on your display and tap it? I'm hoping to enable a swipe command using the Nova launcher, but I'm simply not seeing a way to do this. My home screen is my only screen. I'm using Nova launcher and have disabled swiping by removing all but the home screen. The home screen contains numerous folders and my calendar. Everything in one place - no swiping necessary! I want to keep this look without having to add the widget. I prefer it over SoundHound and Shazam because it hooks directly into Google Music where I have a membership.

.... But no way to save favorites or look up lyrics or info about a song. I love the small size of the app!!!.... But not that it's only widget size is 4x1. Give me favorites and lyrics and I'll rate 5 stars. And I can finally uninstall huge and slow SoundHound.

Ive used other apps like Shazam and Sound Hound, but this is the fastest and most convenient. It even ID's rare underground songs not found on itunes, or google play store. Nice app to use when in a strip club or night club. Next time someone asks "who sings this song", I can just whip out my phone and ID the sound in 5 seconds.

I had to switch from my previous music recognition app because this one is just as efficient without invasive permissions and useless features. Takes little to no memory, it works well with the play store, and if you have All Access on Google Play Music it's like stream-lining music that you want to listen to.

i still love google and stand behind them. i have all this data that needs to be attached to an app or something in order to fix my mistakes while learning and whatever damage any outsiders may have caused, not only to me but apparently to lots of people. id like to profit from what I KNOW but not the way it has been presented. the fine line between, transparency, SECURITY, honesty, real, open source, marketing, analytical, profitable, and INTEGRITY, has been crossed too many times. So where do u begin?

T70%

I love this app/widget, but now that I have been upgraded to Android 7.0 it does not show me the name of the song and I have to remove the widget from my screen and add it back to use it again. The song that it detected does show up on my history. Please fix this because I would rather not usr your competitors bloatware.

I loved this widget. Now on my RAZR MAXX HD with GEL it no longer works. Request failed every single time. Works great on my Nexus 7 and XOOM, both with GEL. Google, please help so I don't have to go back to Shazam!

Worked absolutely great at first, but ever since I updated my s5 it stopped working. When I tap on it to listen to a song, it shows the little sound bars, but then freezes wothout finishing and the only way to fix this is by removing the widget and putting it back. It's a shame because I use it A LOT and it would be great if there was a solution. Once it's fixed I will give 5 stars. Thank you.

The app is sensitive enough to detect songs in noisy rooms. You don't need to be right beside the sound, you can be across the room. Wow! Keeps disabling itself after reboot. Lately, Shazam gives better results where Google sound search can not find song. 3 Stars.

The widget freezes upon successful ID of a song. It does show up in the song ID history, however in order to use the widget again I have to remove the widget from my home screen and re-add it. Restarting the phone, force stopping, clearing cache and data, uninstalling and reinstalling all do not fix the issue. Only removing and re-adding it to my home screen fix it.

T70%
by T####:

So it goes down from 5 stars because since the update it won't recognize songs and occasionally says there's no internet even when there is. But when it is working properly it's a great widget to have if you're trying to figure out what song is on the radio (or even whats playing quietly in a packed restaurant)

Been using this to discover music since its release and has worked flawlessly. Widget allows you to quickly use the app which is needed. Very basic setup which is great and history goes all the way back. Only problem I just started having is on my new pixel phone the widget freezes half way through song. Since its worked on my last 3 phones I blame the OS since this is now Nougat. Hoping a fix can be released for this?

I have the all access pass for Google Play music and every time I use this app to identify a song it shows the song in the Music Play Store were it wants me to buy it even though I have the all access pass. It does give me the option to listen to the album in Google Play Music then I have to just find the song and select it, but this kinda defeats the purpose of the app. Hopefully Google will eventually provide a way for this app to pull up the song in Google Play Music instead or have better integration.

T70%
by T####:

Please link this straight to play music! It's so irritating to have to go to the play store and then select to listen in play music, especially as a subscriber. Rhapsody's song recognizer places songs directly into a playlist. No one buys individual songs anymore, so this is a inconvenience. If this isn't fixed by mid-year I'm going back to rhapsody.

I love this app! I use it when I hear songs in the car, then pull up the history later to download. However, recently it has stopped working, won't recognize songs. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and it still isn't working. Please fix and I'll fix my rating. Looks like I'm not the only one with this issue. Samsung galaxy s6.

It works great, for me. Every phone I've used works just fine, but several friends have reported that it doesn't work for them. I checked the app and apparently it's Google abandon-ware. Perhaps to not offend popular developers like Shazam or Sound Hound?

X70%

This is definitely the best music identifiyer app out there. Hear a song you love but have no clue who the artist is, or the song name? Tap it and let your phone listen! It's that easy! And it saves the songs you search so you can look back at it later! Useful, helpful, easy, and fun!

C70%
by C####:

The music detection works very good and I would give it 5 stars. But what annoys me is the missing Google Music integration. The songs are opened in the Play Store and I'm offered to buy them although I have all access. I have to search the song manually in the Google Music app. If this is fixed, it'll be 5 stars.

T70%
by T####:

Nice widget but too slow on audio recognition! Tried it with a handful of highly known tracks from the past 10 years and took nearly 20 seconds. Same tracks in Shazam took around 5 seconds. Plus the reliability of getting the track and artist seems hit and miss! Played the same songs and was unable to locate artist occasionally despite it being exactly the same part of the track being used each test. I'm sure this will improve in time, but for now I'll stick to old reliable Shazam.

T70%

It used to operate flawlessly. Now, it will listen to a song, and then it freezes. After removing and replacing the widget, it actually shows the song I had been trying to identify. Uninstalling and reinstalling didn't fix it. I would hate to clear all the data associated with the app because it has a history of songs I searched, but... So...it appears everyone with a Nexus 6P is reporting the same problem...let's go Google..."flagship" phone...fix it!

C70%
by C####:

I love Google apps EXCEPT this one, I've been a Shazam user for years and when I came across this app I was hoping that I could replace it but there's no way, this app works horribly, it doesn't detect anything, maybe one out of ten at best...I hope it gets better...

I can't use it because after it was successfully installed it didn't still appeared on my widgets. Please fix this as fast as possible.

You can't beat this! Have you ever wondered who is singing that song you're hearing? Or maybe you want to know what the song is altogether. With this app it will let you know! It doesn't know 100% EVERY song, but almost all of them. It knows enough to get you by. You'll love it! NOTE: It's actually a WIDGET, Not an APP. So when you look for it after downloading, it'll be with WIDGETS Not the APPS.

Loved this app from the get go, but on 9/16/15 app stopped recognizing songs. Will show that it is hearing the song but always receive the "Oops, it failed. Retry??" now.

I love this App and have had this for a long time now.. And had all my songs on it etc.. But I just recently had to reinstall.. Now it will not recognize any songs.. Even on Wi-Fi and 4g... Very disappointed. Please fix thank you. This is the only reason I gave three stars, if it gets fixed then I'll give five

Newest Comment: this application is part of an overpriced and undependable music program/app. There are better and cheaper ones available. After more than a year I've given Google Music the chance, prices go up and support has gone down. Canceled and uninstalling. *Just avoid this and go w/a diff music app! Now we have to pay each month to use Google Music *plus* download a second widget to identify music *plus* pay per song to add it to our library. What is the monthly fee for Google music for/worth?

This app QUIT WORKING about 9/23/2015. I seem to recall seeing a Google Play Music update. Maybe that killed Sound Search??!!
