About Horse Side Vet Guide

HORSE SIDE VET GUIDE IS THE MOST HIGHLY RATED HORSE HEALTH APP AVAILABLE! Do you have questions about your horse’s health – colic, lameness, foaling, diseases or injuries? Search for answers in Horse Side Vet Guide. Created by Doug Thal DVM DABVP, a lifelong horseman and veterinarian that has practiced exclusively equine veterinary medicine for over 20 years & is board certified in equine practice.  HSVG gives you quick access to a massive & constantly growing database – conveniently available to you “horse side.”

HSVG provides helpful information about equine health and first-aid from the moment you notice a problem with your horse - My Observation. It contains practical advice, suggested skills, and questions to discuss with your vet.

Horse Side Vet Guide is of value in an emergency and non-emergency, and it helps you distinguish between the two. HSVG also contains dozens of high quality instructional videos, and other media designed to enable you to become an active participant in ensuring your horse’s good health.

However, HSVG is not structured as a simple decision tree that takes you down a singular path based on your input. It is not a substitute for your local equine veterinarian. It does not, and cannot, anticipate and address all of the subtle variations and unique circumstances associated with your horse’s health. That is your veterinarian's job.

- Make better decisions about your horse’s health.
- Learn more about common ailments including colic, wounds, injuries, lameness and equine diseases.
- Learn what to do in an emergency and how to provide first-aid, when necessary.
- Increase the quality of communication between you and your equine vet.
- Follow a logical thought process for addressing any equine heath care problems.
- Utilize a quality alternative to Dr. Google.

Ok – so what is Horse Side Vet Guide exactly?

HSVG is a custom-built relational database of equine health information that contains concise information about common problems such as colic, lameness and wounds to rare diseases.  Records are contained in 1 of 9 categories:

·      Your Observations
·      Vet Diagnostics
·      Vet Diagnoses
·      Vet Treatments
·      Your Skills
·      Your Supplies
·      Terms & Topics
·      Media
·      Outside Resources

These records are extensively interlinked, providing a uniquely contextualized approach to any equine health issue.

We continuously add and update the records in HSVG. We have placed great emphasis on completing the MY OBSERVATIONS records first. You can find "full access" records with a keyword search, in the alphabetical browse lists, and hyperlinked inside other records. Incomplete (or "partial access") records are listed inside full access records, with no hyperlink. Many other records are hidden from view, and will be available later. After we complete a partial or hidden record we change it to "full access" and it becomes immediately available to you after the app has been synchronized to your mobile device.

This app is useful whether you have one horse or manage a barn. It's packed with easy to understand information on horse care, illness, injury, worming, first aid supplies, etc. Very comprehensive. Treat yourself or call the vet? This app helps you make that determination.

N70%

This is a great guide. It's practical, sensible, and, so far as I can tell, accurate. The author is a veterinarian. It's as good or better than most printed reference works on horse health and first aid.

D70%

Fast answers to most urgent questions and points me in the right direction as to whether I need a vet immediately or if I can manage without.

Some of the videos don't work and saying that he does not believe in using food to catch a horse is unhelpful. Positive reinforcement training techniques are used by modern animal trainers all over the world with great success. Positive reinforcement is not only about training but about changing emotions towards training. Many zoos train their animals to accept medical procedures without the need for sedation this way. There is no reason why horses can not be trained the same way.

This app has lots of great info, some general , some very specific. Its easy to use, I've only had it a week and I've looked up lots of interesting things. Obviously it does not replace a vet, but has good information and is presented in an easy to use format. I like the option to keep specifics about your horse and how to do general horse health checks. Really glad I got this app!

So, I know now that I should have read the fine print. after buying and installing your app, I wanted to see how to find the pulse on the leg... no pics. finally figure out the only pics you have or any media is a pic of the eye that you use on your advertisement on the app store, a pic of the sole of the food and a bump on a leg (not a good pic either). It says you will get this up and running on the app sometime. well I paid for it, I want it... I don't understand why a smart phone app doesn't have the same videos and pictures on your website. It's a smart phone for goodness sakes. I'd have been better off just looking at the website on my phone, OHHHH but I got the app so I would have the info at my fingertips INSIDE the barn that doesn't get good enough connection to the cell phone towers to view websites...... NOT A HAPPY CUSTOMER AND LEAVING THIS AS A NOT SO NICE REVIEW TOO! Does it have good info in print form, sorta, if the person can read through it all, understand it when under pressure and is good at visualizing instructions, which not everyone is good at.

Kudos to the developers of this app! Fantastic tool for horse lovers to use with their veterinary teams. The interlinked and relational database, with graphics and additional resources, is wonderful! So far my favorite horse app. Only thing that would make it perfect would be a section to log care for each horse....worming, teeth, farrier, shots, vet visits, etc.

For the price of a coffee, now I can look up my horse's symptoms right when I see them. This app has everything - videos, diagnostic tools, diagrams, how-to guides and so much more. I bought it on my iPad and use it so much I bought it for my android phone. I'm now the go to person for my friends when they have any equine questions, it's the best $5 I've ever spent.

I am a worry wart when it comes to my pets of all kinds. HSVG gives me the comfort of not being in the dark and knowing what to do. I highly recommend this to all horse owners. Its intuitive, intelligent and very simple. The content is extensive and extreamely detailed. Bravo Dr. Thal!

N70%

Had this app on my iPad since it came out. Just got the Android version for my phone. It's just as awesome! It's a must-have when caring for horses. Love the way how I can go from Observations to extensive lists of possible causes to check on or search. You don't need to know the medical terms for finding what you need: Searching "watery eye" will give me results for teary, running, draining as well due to a vast number of cross reference keywords. It's not a static app you buy and are stuck with--this thriving knowledge base for all parts of horse health that grows almost daily. Beats the heck out of "Dr. Google" because the info is reviewed by a vet and reliable as well as complete. You don’t need a high speed internet connection for reviewing the information and videos once you've installed it, so it’s always ready even when you're out and about. Run a sync to get the new content when you have a signal. It allows you to see directly which articles were added or updated. Very nice indeed. This app truly shows how much thought and care went into its design and it is remarkably free of bugs. In months of use I've not run into problems.
