Somme 100 with Dan Snow and The Royal British Legion brings to life the events surrounding the Battle of the Somme, the bloodiest battle of the First World War, and the experiences of the soldiers who fought in it. This app combines video, audio recordings, animated maps and archive photos to tell the story of the battle (1 July to 18 November 1916) and the sacrifice of the men, including thousands from the Pals battalions, who were injured or lost their lives fighting in it, 100 years ago.
Over 200 images, videos, historical and map entries, including:
- Dan Snow explaining key moments from the Battle of the Somme
- Audio recordings from men who served in the trenches.
- Incredible archive images from the trenches;
- Soldier’s diaries and other first hand accounts;
- Answers to the 10 big questions about the Somme from Professor Sir Hew Strachan.
- Soldier’s poems;
- Maps and animated battle plans for all the key events.

This app had great potential, but the initial app is too big for what it is, then it downloads even more to make it even bigger. It also changes chapters/pages whilst in the middle of reading another and gets quite annoying very quickly. Maybe I'll try it again in a few months.

Have just returned from area of the Somme where my father was in 1916 in Albert and visiting the family war graves so many lives lost for what so that Haige could get a name but not the one he hoped for Butcher is about right as my father told me he was just used as cannon fodder as so his mates

I have had this on my Galaxy S7 Edge now since it was first released and it has never worked. I have uninstalled and reinstalled so many times that tonight I am actually giving up!!!! After downloading animated maps and then the extracting animated maps message appears, nothing happens!!!! It is a nice idea but app is poorly implemented and has a whole stack of information missing that should be in there. Such a shame!!

The section of the App concerning Pals Battalions fails to provide any information concerning Birmingham's three Pals Battalions. 14th,15th & 16th Battalions Royal Warwickshire Regiment. A serious error.

Brilliant app portrays a grim reminder to British working people of cost of european involvment bourne by working classes, and the self seeking of those who led them. 100 years on nothing changes as ruling class seek to maintain their own intrests in europe.

There's lots of good info here, but the app is slow and the skeuomorphic design is a gimmicky distraction. Was looking forward to the animated battle maps - these seem to download OK but then fail to extract to my device (Nexus 6P). Would have also liked to see the trenches marked on the area maps. With a bit or work it could be great. Wouldn't mind paying if the money went to charity.
