About Coverage Mapper

Coverage Mapper is a crowd sourced cellular signal strength mapping application.

Coverage Mapper will record and submit cellular signal strength data to a central server, to generate accurate coverage maps for your provider.

Please check out the website (http://www.coveragemapper.com), preferably on a computer, to get a better understanding of the application before downloading it.

As you travel with the application running, it records your device's signal strength, tied to your current location. This data is all uploaded to a central server, where it is aggregated with the data from other users, and averaged into accurate coverage maps that show not just where a provider has coverage, but also how good the coverage is.

This is a beta application. Please report any issues on the forum or by email.

Since this question is frequently asked, install to SD is not an option, because Coverage Mapper runs as a background service, which cannot be moved to the SD card.

I've been using this app and loving it for years. Lately, however, it hasn't been working. On my HTC One M9, on T-Mobile LTE, the app reports "Not logging invalid data for (T-Mobile's carrier code)." I'm uninstalling.

U70%
by U####:

Not working!

C70%
by C####:

Had full bars logging WIND Mobile coverage and it says I did not have any coverage on the map once uploaded and waited a week for data to show.

C70%
by C####:

What this app does is revolutionary, and it was one of the first I ever found on Android to accurately and easily log coverage information. I don't like apps that won't let you run their service in the background, but this one does! That being said, Sensorly in particular among its competition offers a lot more features. Hoping for new features soon!

by C####:

I don't get why apps that sre no longer developed are in the play store...

C70%
by C####:

looks like the developer dropped it, map no longer updates. I had used it for so long, so sad.

C70%
by C####:

Does not work on Telus in Canada anymore. Shame too, it was a fantastic app.

C70%
by C####:

RootMetrics 2nd, sensorly 3rd, open signal maps & cellmapper tied 4th, coverage mapper 5th, and cellumap a distant 6th. But we should use all of them at the same time to create evidence carriers can't ignore. Each collects different data needed to see network problems.

N70%
by N####:

Works very well on Sprint. No 4G where I am, if that is worth mentioning, but seems accurate for signal in general, as designed. Shows black where I know that I lost my signal.

M70%
by M####:

Great app. Using it to map wind's network.

M70%
by M####:

Does not report Verizon 4G anymore on my Thunderbolt.

B70%
by B####:

This app and website are great, especially on limited-service networks like WIND Mobile in Canada.

M70%
by M####:

Very useful

M70%
by M####:

Says GPS signal isn't accurate enough even though i've locked on to 6 satellites. Atrix with gingerbread. Fail.

M70%
by M####:

Interesting to map all the blackspots in you local area, and see which networks are better!

M70%
by M####:

Used to work better. Data logged and uploaded doesn't show up on the map 80% of the time. GPS takes a long time to lock on. Overall mapping of Ontario is quite good for WIND.

N70%
by N####:

Nice idea, too many limitations. Got to have screen constantly on, and Must use gps too...

G70%
by G####:

This app does a good job of collecting data. It doesn't take up a lot of battery which is nice. I like how detailed the maps are; you can see exactly on the map were you always drop calls.

M70%
by M####:

@ David, it says right when installing it needs the device in no sleep mode, that's why it has a black screen button to save battery. App works well.

M70%
by M####:

Wish there would be OSM support because Google Maps is terrible slow and often very old. Also I miss basic stats and a web option to see what data I uploaded (and where is the export?). The "don't turn off device" is TERRIBLE and very battery draining, but seems there's nothing the developer can do. 2.5 of 5.

Y70%
by Y####:

Looked like what I wanted but doesn't work with the screen off. & I don't keep gps on, I like my battery to last all day.

M70%
by M####:

Good n nice app

M70%
by M####:

Keeps giving errors from network, pity, it used to work. Support unhelpful

G70%

Kinda works but not as good. As others yet.

All good

The concept behind this is brilliant - capture a user's mobile device signal strength and display it on a map to give other users Real World coverage maps... But in practice, this depends largely on where you reside - Australia for example, has very little data. There is also a few design quirks - for example, the guide to the colors is only on an external Web site, the screen must be left on and only the first SIM in dual-SIM mobile devices is read. It's a start, but more work is needed...

K70%
by K####:

I've used this over a month time to time, accepting the fact this drains battery quickly. The app has collected information of cell ids and when uploaded it doesn't complain. But never the visited areas and their coverage show later on the map.

I don't like apps that won't let you run their service in the background, but this one does! That being said, Sensorly in particular among its competition offers a lot more features. This app could be more popular if it were updated and brought into the present. :)

C70%
by C####:

It used to be my preferred app, now when I report trips it comes back and most of the areas show no coverage or continuous red areas, even with good signal

C70%
by C####:

The only request I can make is that the view map is overlaid on the map app instead of in the browser. It would improve navigation.

C70%
by C####:

Use this app when you are driving around in your car, bus or train. The app crashes when you look at the map. The bad thing is that it takes hours to update the map. Another bad thing is that you need to leave the screan on so it can record your posiotion.

When I click to show the CARRIER map it picks the first county in the list (Afganistan) by default. I think it should show MY current carrier and country instead.
