Sejak manusia Iahir di dunia, manusia sangat bergantung pada alam lingkungannya. Manusia membutuhkan alam untuk dapat memenuhi kebutuhan hidupnya. Karena didorong kebutuhan hidupnya tersebut. manusia berusaha untuk memanfaatkan alam. Hal inilah menuntut manusia untuk mengenal alam sehingga lahirlah studi geografi.

Istilah geografi pertama kali dikemukakan oleh Eratothenes (176:194 sm). Kata geografi berasal dari bahasa Yunani, yaitu geo dan graphien.Geo berarti bumi dan graphien berarti sesuatu yang ditulis, digambar, atau dijelaskan. Jadi Geografi berarti Ilmu pengetahuan yang mempelajari, menjelaskan, menuliskan  tentang bumi.

Dalam geografi kita akan mempelajari segala sesuatu yang tampak di permukaan bumi, baik bentuk kehidupan, kenampakan permukaan bumi dengan segala gejala-gejalanya maupun faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhinya, seperti benda-benda di luar angkasa, keadaan dan benda-benda di dalam bumi maupun di permukaan bumi. Oleh karena itu, definisi geografi secara luas adalah ilmu yang mempelajari bumi bagian dalam, permukaan bumi, dan atas (luar angkasa) secara keseluruhan yang berinteraksi dengan alam lingkungannva.
