About Darker (Screen Filter)

Darker can lower your screen brightness to extremely low levels, to help prevent eyestrain during the night. Use the built-in color filter* to adjust the color of your display, perfect for filtering out harsh white backgrounds during the night.

This app is fully functional and does not include advertisements. Additional paid features are unlockable through an In-app purchase.

Xiaomi device / MIUI users need to go to Settings → Installed apps → Darker → Other permissions, and enable "Display pop-up window" for Darker to work correctly.

Paid features include:

» Auto-On & Auto-Off
» Start at boot
» Lower brightness below 20%
» Darken navigation bar
» Custom filter colors
» Root mode
» Customizable notification buttons
• Up to three buttons can be added for quick access.
• Buttons to increase and decrease the brightness (+5%, -5%, +10%, -10%)
• Buttons to set a specific brightness (@0%, @10%, @20%, ... , @90%, @100%)
• Quick toggles (stop, pause, reset, color filter)

Note: When manually installing APK files, Android blocks the "Install" button from being pressed when Darker is running. This is NOT a bug. It's a protective measure to prevent malicious apps from camouflaging the install button. Pausing Darker will solve this.

*The color filter is similar to how the desktop version of f.lux works. Selecting a redder color will reduce more bluelight emitted from the display.

Tasker Support
Darker has Tasker support, use these intents to send commands to Darker:

darker.STOP
darker.PAUSE
darker.INCREASE_5
darker.INCREASE_10
darker.DECREASE_5
darker.DECREASE_10
darker.SET_10
darker.SET_20
darker.SET_30
darker.SET_40
darker.SET_50
darker.SET_60
darker.SET_70
darker.SET_80
darker.SET_90
darker.SET_100
darker.TOGGLE_COLOR
darker.ENABLE_COLOR
darker.DISABLE_COLOR

Add the above intents to Tasker by going to Action Category→System→Send Intent→Action, leave the other fields default, and note that the intents are case sensitive.

These two intents below need an additional parameter in the "Extra" field

darker.SETCOLOR "Extra" field: COLOR:1~16 (Colors are numbered left to right, top to bottom)
darker.COLORSTRENGTH "Extra" field: STRENGTH:1~10

The intent below needs the "Target" field set to "Service"

darker.START

FlickStart Support
Darker can work in conjunction with FlickStart, an app which can send commands to Darker by using the sensors on your phone or Android Wear device.

The command set for Darker is available for download on the FlickStart website. Simply download the command set and import it into FlickStart.

I use this app since 3 years. It is the most friendly screen filter i have ever used. I love this app. But unfortunately the secure app installation option has been removed. That option was used when installing an app from memory card or somewhere else other than playstore. You should add 2 things: 1. Thie secure app button which automatically pause "Darker" when installing an app. 2. An on-screen button that can be used everywhere so that we could get rid of pulling down status bar each time. This button should be like one tap button.

U70%
by U####:

This lightweight app is fantastic for use during night time where the minimum brightness is still too high for comfortable levels. 20% is often all you'll need but color fidelity gets lost around this area. The only downside is that screenshots taken when the app is in effect will have a dark overlay based on your darkness settings, in which case you'll have to temporarily pause the app.

X70%
by X####:

Auto-pause has been useless for the past several weeks. Even when set to zero lux in a bright environment, Darker can't decide what it should be doing and goes bright-dim-bright-dim-bright-dim while I'm trying to read. Auto-pause is why I paid for Darker, and if you can't make it work, I'll look elsewhere. I have a feeling it has to do with fact that, since Nougat, there are still bright elements on the screen and the screen is now generating its own light.

Love this app and regret not searching for it earlier. I wear glasses and of course it's difficult to wear them to bed where I often reply to emails and what not, I get headaches without them in the dark and from having a bright white screen. My low brightness is so standard but this app is perfect for all that and I love that I can slowly reduce the brightness as my eyes adjust not to mention the fact this app takes up such little space! Probably the only app that I've ever give 5 stars or a novel review

A tinted dimmer is an absolute necessity for everyone, no matter their circumstances. With developers ignoring WCAG 2.0 Accessibility standards & instead catering to their laymen customers' belief that a bright white background looks “cleaner”, even sporadic periods on the Net can harm one's vision (Me = 20/10 vision to glasses). Even Google ignores visitors' eye care in lew of the “cleanliness” facade. This is the best dimmer with easy-access controls, useful color options, & light on resources.

I wanted an app that would let me darken my screen at night, and this fits the bill. You can even adjust the color and how dark it is. The free version has no background ads or anything.

C70%
by C####:

Great app, love the support to dim navbar! Now the only problem that remains - some apps (for example Facebook comments) somehow "bug" this app and brighten the screen. When you restart the offending app everything seems to get back to normal.

I did not have a review before my Marshmellow update. I should have given it 5 stars before, but now I am glad I didn't. Users on Marshmellow will not be able to dim capacitive buttons like they could while on Lollipop. I know the Devs do not read these, but they do not have a contact or support listed in their app.

Google has been playing tricks with the native night mode between Android N betas. This app makes up for the latest night mode omission. It acts like a widget, activates night mode, dims the screen and turns on a blue light filter to the right levels. It allows you to pause or stop the app from the notification shade. Great job!

R70%
by R####:

It's the best screen filter app for Android. I have tried twilight and everything else but this is the only thing that comes close to f.lux (which only works for root). Upgraded to pro and never regretted it. Must have!

R70%
by R####:

A cool down app messed up the light senser and had it at 3! The brigness bar did nothing when I tried to turn it back down. As it's nighttime I got blased with a bright phone, arrg! Thank you for making this.

Does the dev realize that if you turn off Darker and close the app, there's no way to open settings again? Absolutely brain dead stupid. It's such a great idea marred by a complete lack of intelligence.

R70%

This app helps me to play games at night like time 3:40pm when my mom scolded me to sleep but when I open this my mom didn't see....... So I think it is nice.....

This is a beautifully laid out app, it does exactly what it says it does and MORE! I originally got this app on my older phone to help save my battery, but I recently switched to my new device, and i'm now using this app as a normal user would use it for, to keep your eyes from burning deep into your skull exposing the fact that you are a small speck in a GIANT HUGE ASS UNIVERSE! So basically this helps you keep your sanity at night, as well as preserves your battery during the day, but only if you want it to. this app will need you to set it up for yourself, like the blue light filtering feature, you need to set it up to do that, it does not do that automatically, although when it turns down the brightness it does stop a lot of the blue light, but not as much as if you would've set up the filter yourself, also, I recommend setting it up at night, because if you do it during the day, it might not be the right filtering setting for you to use... I also think that the paid version is missing a few things such as "profiles" that you can switch to, like if you were to use it to preserve your battery, then it could be ultra useful, like switching to/from bright/dark environments.

This is probably the best app for nightmode especially since it doesn't have any unnecessary ads or anything AND it takes up less than 1mb of space! Only downsides I find with this is that my home button and back button etc. still glow brightly, and the other is that when I'm watching videos with it on, it randomly turns off. Other than that, great app!!

If the application is just on off why does it need any permissions? I deleted in favorite blue light filter with no permissions needed.

This is actually a brilliant app. I've edited my review as I found that my screen problems were due to a bad sensor on one of my devices, not the app. This app works perfectly on three of my devices.

I paid $2.50 and does NOT WORK PROPERLY!! setting time is useless dont do anything..you cant set your desired time to control brightness.

I'd not get a app that can truly lower brightness ,and is lower than cell phone' default hardware minimum before I got this one. It's an awesome app and helps me a lot, especially at night. thanks.

Great app.. does decent job. But the on-screen navigation buttons area of the screen remains bright.. Sometimes its irritating while using full screen apps.

R70%

100% is the lowest brightness available, it is a screen dimmer only but needs the option of going up from the lowest stock brightness to 100%. I can't get a refund because I paid in the app, rather than just buy the pro version from the Play Store

Amazing Notification buttons to decrease or increase brightness without the need to open the app! Much better than other Dim apps. Thanks Dev!

I really like this but i have a problem that whenever i use the browser, Darker stops after a while. How can i fix this? EDIT: Changing to 3 stars, cannot use the internet without it turning off.

Easily the best screen dimming app. I've tried a few and this one came out on top as the simplest, unobtrusive, clean, and effective option. No clutter, no ads, just function. Also just tap the app icon to instantly start and stop the screen dim. Best feature 10/10 seriously great.

It's great help at night but lately it started crashing a lot and I mean a lot, like nearly every minute or it goes to a maximum of 5, please do something, if you can fix this

I totally recommend it to anyone. Its perfect for night time because even my lowest setting of brightness is bright and if your at the movie theaters to check your phone. This is the best one I've seen

It does what it says, but Root feature is not that safe. When I enabled it for the first time I saw no difference in brightness than what was offered by my system at the lowest brightness level. One I locked the screen, magic happened. When I wanted to unlock the screen, it didn't turn up, the screen remained total black. I plugged my device, still nothing. Finally, I had to reboot. Besides, please provide more than 3 notification buttons in future updates.

I am hoping this app will work on my new phone. Was using ScreenFilter but it doesn't work. Your app gives me a blue light filter and has a nice pause feature right in the notification screen. I will up the stars to five if I find no problems after some time.

Since it is the blue tones of screens that can actually cause sleep disorders, affecting the so called sleep hormone, the option to use warm tones is brilliant! Easy to use and takes minimal space.

I've been using an old Samsung S3 lately, which barely dims the screen at all, but this app does it! I'm actually shocked at how well it works, and without the screen flicker I've seen from some apps.
