Did you know that 'flavour of the month' originated in a marketing campaign in American ice-cream parlours in the 1940s, when a particular flavour would be specially promoted for a month at a time? And did you know that 'off the cuff' refers to the rather messy practice of writing impromptu notes on one's shirt cuff before speaking in public?
These and many more idioms are explained and put into context in the Oxford Dictionary of English Idioms completed with a range of recently established idioms such as 'the elephant in the corner', 'go figure', 'like a rat up a drainpipe', 'sex on legs', 'step up to the plate', 'too posh to push', 'a walk in the park', 'win ugly'.

I downloaded this, thinking it might come in handy if there was an idiom that was unfamiliar which popped up while I was offline. Normally, I just use search engines. Anyway, I'll never know. The first time I opened it, I was informed that my free trial had expired. Really? Good luck with your business model, seriously. You can make vastly more by giving information away than by selling access to it. Not to mention adding value to the world for everyone, rather than just the fraction of a percent who pay you.

by N####:

After waking up in a morning with new idioms, im waiting for a chance to use them in real life =) but there's no 'word of the day' in trial version, you gotta pay first.. Fortunately there was 50% discount the other day and after ~1 year of using trial version, i decided to get the app..

Might be OK if it included date of origin, which is what I needed. Otherwise, it's pretty much for foreign language speakers, not writers or researchers.

Excellent app. Most exhaustive and authentic collection of idioms. It should have been better had it worked offline too.

Nothing but problems. I have purchased about a half dozen of these apps from Oxford, after the most recent update the apps have been crashing daily. The widgets won't work anymore. I've tried emailing for support but it seems these apps have been abandoned by the creator and the users have been left with broken apps. Almost $100 down the drain. DO NOT BUY

Crashes all the time, even when I I'm not using it. In general your dictionaries cannot be compared to Paragon dicts.

Paid edition. Fairly comprehensive, but not properly indexed, example type in pot, is fine, type in kettle and says see pot, why not just give me the result and translation.
