สำนักหอสมุด มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ ตระหนักถึงความสำคัญของการเป็นแหล่งรวบรวมองค์ความรู้และการให้บริการข้อมูลท้องถิ่นภาคเหนือ โดยได้กำหนดให้เป็นหนึ่งในพันธกิจหลักของสำนักหอสมุด และได้กำหนดยุทธศาสตร์ในการพัฒนาศูนย์ข้อมูลท้องถิ่นภาคเหนือในแผนกลยุทธ์ สำนักหอสมุด ระยะ ๕ ปี (พ.ศ.๒๕๕๕-๒๕๕๙) ด้วย ทั้งนี้ เพื่อพัฒนาการเป็นแหล่งเรียนรู้ด้านข้อมูลท้องถิ่นภาคเหนือที่พร้อมให้บริการ และสนับสนุนการเป็นสังคมแห่งการเรียนรู้ของประชาคมในมหาวิทยาลัยและสังคมภาคเหนือ

ในปีงบประมาณ ๒๕๕๗ สำนักหอสมุด มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ ได้จัดทำและเผยแพร่ข้อมูล “เครื่องเขินล้านนา” ผ่านเว็บไซต์สำนักหอสมุด มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ ที่ http://library.cmu.ac.th/ntic/lannalacquerware/ โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อรวบรวมและเผยแพร่ข้อมูลภาคเหนือในรูปสื่ออิเล็กทรอนิกส์ผ่านเว็บไซต์สำนักหอสมุด รวบรวมองค์ความรู้เกี่ยวกับเครื่องเขิน ซึ่งเป็นศิลปหัตถกรรมที่มีคุณค่าของท้องถิ่นล้านนา โดยให้ข้อมูลทางด้านประวัติความเป็นมา กรรมวิธีการผลิต ลวดลายเครื่องเขินในแต่ละท้องถิ่น และภาพสะท้อนจากอดีตถึงปัจจุบันของเครื่องเขิน อีกทั้ง ยังได้รวบรวมข้อมูลภาพและภาพเคลื่อนไหว จากแหล่งผลิตและแหล่งสะสมในภาคเหนือตอนบน ได้แก่ เชียงใหม่ ลำปาง แพร่ น่าน และจากชุมชนชาติพันธุ์ไท ณ เมืองเชียงตุง รัฐฉาน สาธารณรัฐแห่งสหภาพพม่า ทั้งนี้ เพื่อเป็นการอนุรักษ์ สืบสานภูมิปัญญาท้องถิ่นล้านนา และทำนุบำรุงศิลปวัฒนธรรมท้องถิ่นในด้านข้อมูล อันเป็นประโยชน์ต่อการศึกษาค้นคว้าอย่างกว้างขวาง ตลอดจนปลุกจิตสำนึกให้ชาวล้านนารู้สึกหวงแหน ตระหนักถึงคุณค่าของศิลปวัฒนธรรมของล้านนา
