Oleh penduduk asli burung ini di panggil dengan sebutan garugiwa yang artinya adalah burung arwah, terlepas dari mitos yang beredar mungkin nama tersebut diberikan karena pada saat burung itu berbunyi hanya suaranya saja yang terdengar namun wujud burung itu tidak terlihat, karena burung itu berada di atas ranting di atas pohon-pohon yang tinggi. Selain garugiwa, burung ini juga menyandang gelar burung 1001 suara, hal ini karena memang banyak sekali jenis suara asli alam yang dapat di bawakan oleh burung samyong ini.
