قصة الخبز الحافي تحكي مأساة إنسان قست عليه ظروف الحياة التي فرضت عليه أن يبقى في ظلام الأمية حتى بلغ العشرين عاما من عمره. وكانت طفولته غارقة في عالم الفقر والبؤس والعنف، فعاش في العوالم السفلى بين الطبقات المسحوقة التي حكم عليها القدر بالحرمان والأمراض والغوص في عالم الانحراف بكل أشكاله.
لم يعرف الكاتب طعم حنان الأب، حيث كان أبوه قاسيا جدا، كان يضربه ويعذبه، وقتل أخاه أمامه. كل هذه الظروف التي عاشها الكاتب محمد شكري وقعت تحت قهر الاستعمار وظروف الحرب.
