La Bible est un ensemble de textes considérés comme sacrés par le judaïsme et le christianisme. Les différents groupes religieux peuvent inclure différents livres dans leurs canons, dans un ordre différent. Les textes des livres eux-mêmes ne sont pas toujours identiques d'un groupe religieux à l'autre.
Louis Segond, né le 3 octobre 1810 à Genève (quartier de Plainpalais) et mort le 18 juin 1885 dans cette même ville, est un pasteur et théologien suisse qui, à la demande de la Compagnie des Pasteurs de Genève, a traduit la Bible en français à partir des textes originaux hébreux et grecs.

Louis Segond était un théologien protestant libéral modéré (opposé à d'autres théologiens dits « orthodoxes » qui ne voulaient pas remettre en cause les héritages ancestraux du protestantisme). Sa traduction de la Bible fut donc mal accueillie par les protestants «orthodoxes». Toutefois Segond refusa toujours de retoucher son travail tout en stipulant qu'on pourrait réviser sa traduction après son décès. Malgré ces attaques, la traduction de Louis Segond toucha rapidement un large public au sein du protestantisme: trois cent mille exemplaires seront produits entre 1880 et 1910.

La première publication de sa traduction de l'Ancien Testament est datée de 1874 et celle du Nouveau Testament de 1880. Les deux seront publiées en un seul volume pour la première fois à Oxford en 1880. Cette traduction est usuellement appelée la Bible Segond. Elle deviendra pour un siècle la référence au sein du protestantisme français. Au-delà du protestantisme, la traduction de la Bible Segond est devenue une référence majeure du texte biblique dans le monde francophone.

King James, born October 3, 1810 in Geneva (Plainpalais) and died June 18, 1885 in the same city, is a pastor and Swiss theologian who, at the request of the Company of the Geneva pastors, translated the Bible into french from the Hebrew and Greek originals.

King James was a moderate liberal Protestant theologian (as opposed to other theologians called "orthodox" who would not challenge the ancestral legacies of Protestantism). His translation of the Bible was so badly received by the "orthodox" Protestants. However Segond always refused to touch his work while stipulating that could revise its translation after his death. Despite these attacks, the translation of King James quickly touched a wide audience within Protestantism: three hundred thousand copies will be produced between 1880 and 1910.

The first publication of his translation of the Old Testament is dated 1874 and the New Testament of 1880. Both will be published in one volume for the first time in Oxford in 1880. This translation is usually called the KJV Bible. It will become the reference for a century in the French Protestantism. Beyond the Protestantism, the translation of the KJV Bible has become a major reference of the biblical text in the Francophone world.
