​โรคหลอดเลือดสมองเป็นปัญหาสาธารณสุขที่สำคัญ ในประเทศไทยมีจำนวนผู้ป่วยโรคหลอดเลือดสมองเพิ่มขึ้นทุกปี ผู้ป่วยที่รอดชีวิตจากโรคหลอดเลือดสมองส่วนหนึ่งมักต้องสูญเสียการทำงานของร่างกาย เช่น พูดไม่ชัด หน้าเบี้ยว แขนขาอ่อนแรง สูญเสียการทรงตัว กลืนลำบาก เป็นต้น ซึ่งหากเข้ารับการรักษาได้อย่างรวดเร็ว จะช่วยให้มีโอกาสหายเป็นปกติ ลดการเกิดความพิการและอัตราการตายได้
ปัจจุบันการรักษาโรคสมองขาดเลือดเฉียบพลันที่มีอาการภายใน 4.5 ชั่วโมง โดยการฉีดยาละลายลิ่มเลือดทางหลอดเลือดดำ (Intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator, tPA) เป็นการรักษามาตรฐานที่ช่วยให้ผู้ป่วยมีอาการดีขึ้นอย่างชัดเจน และใช้เวลาตั้งแต่เข้าถึงห้องฉุกเฉินจนได้รับการฉีดยา tPA (Door to needle time) ไม่ควรเกิน 60 นาที
