Apostle of Jesus Christ and first head of the Church. Fisherman Sea of Galilee.

(Simon or Simeon Bethsaida, Galilee - Rome, 64/67 h?.). Bible Study Peter the Apostle.

Apostle of Jesus Christ and first head of the Church. He was a fisherman from the Sea of Galilee, until he left his home in Capernaum to join the disciples of Jesus in the first moments of his preaching; along with Jesus he joined other local fishermen, as his brother Andrew and the two sons of Zebedee, James and John, all of which were part of the original nucleus of the twelve apostles.

San Pedro lacked studies, but soon distinguished himself among the disciples for his strong personality and his closeness to the teacher, often setting themselves up as spokesman for the group. Through the Gospels can be drawn a fairly complete profile of his personality. Pedro is simple, generous and impulsive in their speeches, which sometimes denote a misunderstanding of the true message of the teacher. Jesus, meanwhile, shows a predilection for Simon appears clear from the first meeting. Along with James and John, Peter was involved in all the activity of Jesus, even attending intimates that the other apostles were excluded episodes. In Capernaum, Jesus must often be guest of the family from which came the wife of Peter.

Peter nicknamed Jesus put to point out as the "rock" (petra in Latin) on which would build his Church. At Caesarea Philippi, northeast of Lake Tiberias, the episode took place in St. Peter affirmed the divinity of Jesus: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16, 16.). Jesus judged the claim as a result of illumination high and conferred upon Peter the highest authority: "You Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you that flesh and blood, but my Father who is in . heavens and I tell you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, the gates of hell shall not prevail against it I'll give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound also.. in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed also in heaven "(Matthew 16: 17-19.).

impetuous and sincere personality, San Pedro also had moments of weakness. According to the Gospel account, Peter denied even knowing Jesus three times the night he was arrested, fulfilling a prophecy he had made the teacher; but repented of that denial, his faith did not return to waver and after the crucifixion and resurrection, was privileged with the first appearance of Jesus and devoted himself to spreading his teachings.

After the death of Jesus (. Circa 30 AD), San Pedro became the undisputed leader of the tiny community of early Christian believers in Palestine for fifteen years led the prayers, responding to accusations heresy launched by Orthodox rabbis and admitted to new followers (including the first non-Jews). Around the year 44 he was imprisoned by King Herod Agrippa, but managed to escape and left Jerusalem, dedicated to spreading the new religion by Syria, Asia Minor and Greece. At that time his leadership probably was less evident, disputing the primacy among Christians other apostles, as Paul or James. He attended called Council of Jerusalem (48 or 49), which supported the line of St. Paul opened Christianity to the gentiles, compared to those who followed the Jewish tradition ligand.
