About Working Scale Free

"Working Scale Free" uses your phone's sensors to measure the mass (or weight) of a small object placed on it. The minimum mass you can measure accurately with typical Android devices is about 5 grams. Best results can be obtained for masses between about 10 and 100 grams.

If you place your Android device on a carpet and gently push down on one end with your finger, it will come back to its original position after you remove your finger. The carpet has spring-like properties. This app is designed to make use of the spring-like properties of common objects in combination with a known mass (a "calibration mass") to measure an unknown mass. It tracks your device's changing angle using its built-in motion sensors. You prepare your Android device by placing a calibration mass near one end while it is resting on a spring-like object. After this step, the mass of any small object placed on top of the calibration mass can be determined.

Here are the steps you should follow to get the best results (see help page in app for additional suggestions):

1. Place your Android device face-up on a carpet, sofa cushion, slightly inflated Zip-lock bag (good), flexible "ice pack(s)" (best), folded towel, or any other "springy" object. It helps to place a small piece of paper on your Android device where you plan to place the calibration mass. This makes it less likely that it will slide.

2. Press the 'Start' button. Do not touch the device again until it commands you to place the calibration mass on it.

3. For users in the USA, we recommend using at least one quarter for the calibration step (but two quarters is better). You should use more coins for larger devices. You should easily notice movement of the device when you place the coin(s) on it. You can look up the mass of a quarter (or other coin) on the US mint coin specifications web page (http://www.usmint.gov/about_the_mint/?action=coin_specifications). Watch the progress bar and make sure you place the coin(s) on the device after the progress bar begins moving, and make sure the device stops moving before the progress bar reaches the end. You can enter the mass of the calibration mass in the 'Settings' page prior to starting your calibration and measurements. There, you can also enter the number of calibrating masses (for instance, one, two or three coins). As a general rule, the mass of your unknown object should not be too different from the total mass of your calibrating masses.

4. We recommend you place the calibration mass near the top center of the Android device.

5. After the calibration step, place your unknown on top of the calibration mass. The accuracy is at best 0.1 gram; more often a single measurement will have an accuracy of 0.2 - 0.3 grams, but it will depend on the setup. You can run your own tests of the accuracy by placing known masses on the device.

6. When you are done, press the Stop button. If you would like to measure more objects, you will need to repeat the above steps. Press the 'clear' button to reset the displays to '0.00'.

7. It is recommended that you enable the averaging display. It displays the average of every 10 measurements.

Be careful when trying to measure liquids that you do not spill any on your Android device.

Use "Working Scale Free" for science experiments, measuring small quantities of ingredients for a recipe, or making a game of guessing masses or weights.

The accuracy is about +/- 0.2 grams. This is NOT a gag app!

"Working Scale Free" is ad-supported. If you find this to be a helpful app, please consider supporting us by installing the pro version. It lacks ads, includes a second completely independent method to measure mass, a save button, and history.

WHERE ARE THE NUMBERS GOING ANYWAY?!?! Even after clearing and starting the calibration process, the numbers continued to fluctuate and would not weigh anything. DISAPPOINTED...BOOOOOOOO!!!

I haven't even been able to use it ,press start and 20-30minits later it is still displaying BUSY,uninstall and reinstall it the same thing, report it to Google, hell they don't care if you open multiple accounts with different names and use those for the sole purpose to scam people out of money, they use the same photos in all of them

I think if the calibration is correct it works I. Got one number and added a gram and it jump ( 1 ) from the set number. I write another review later after adjusting and using, but so far, it a nice app.

S70%

I followed a step by step tutorial on YouTube but simply couldn't get the app to calibrate correctly in the end ???? In the end, it might just be my S7 because it looks like other ppl have had success with the app when using older models... Either way 1Star

X70%

the scale never would sit still for any amount of time at all. It would jump from one extreme to the next. Not to mention it was inaccurate

The readings are tolerable, but it's a picky pain in the ass with zero user friendliness. Not only that, but your instruction manual is less comprehensive than a toddler's picture book.

S70%

Can't get it to work. Hit start and it stays on the "preparing" screen for over 20 mins each time I tried to use. I even uninsulated and reinstalled and it still won't work.

Horrible app! Do not download, is full of malware.

Dev great job. Took me 2 min by following eazy directions. Should be a paid app since it works. So thanks! Weighed a nickle at 5.4g. Meaning if you follow directions and understand how the sensors in you're phone work you will have a good back up scale. It even weighed a .4 tenth of a gram item for me dead on. Learn how to calibrate and adjust the scale by reading the directions. My phone is a 100 dollar lg and my IQ is barely pushing tripple digits so if you cant figure it out then dont get mad at the developer cause you keep getting shorted. Wonder why? Put the phone on top of a platic bag with air in it so it will tilt with little side to side pressure. If you still cant get it, ill tell you the secret. Pook a few holes in a plastic bag then put super glue on a quarter gluing it to the middle of one side of the bag. Next put the phone in the Ziploc bag and place it in the toilet. Flush the toilet and when you cant see the quarter put the item you want to weigh in you're ear. Repeat until sastified

Please fix your app!! On my Android phone, when I enter the calibration mass and number the bar moves to the right like I'm typing something, but the numbers don't show up so I have no idea of knowing if I've entered the correct numbers.. I know this thing can work I just can't get past this problem

Just remember to follow directions on the You Tube video. I thought it was a joke at first because it involved a zip-lock bag a post it note but that's really all you need! After all, I am not as brainy as these app inventors! Have fun!

S70%

The phone needs to be sitting on an object that makes it easy for the phone to tilt when placeing an object on it. Dont place what your weighing in the middle but on one side of the phone. Don't forget to calibrate only when prompted. May jump up or down about 0.3 but gives an average number below anyway. If you can't get it to work it's you not the app!!! Good luck!

Works amazing as long as you do as the instructions follows i just tested it with a digi thats on point i give these boys 10 stars amazing job guys. If you guys place the scale on a bag with air in it and level it out and do as the on screen calibrating says it definitely works. If you cant follow simple steps you dont need to smoking what ever it is you are needing to weigh
