Иоанн Предтеча и Креститель Господень был сын Захарии, престарелого священника, и родился за шесть месяцев до рождения Господа Иисуса. Его рождение и служение были предсказаны ангелом Гавриилом. Юность свою Иоанн провел в пустыне до самого времени своего явления народу. Будучи тридцати лет от роду, Иоанн начал проповедовать в пустыне Иудейской и призывать народ к покаянию в грехах и исправлению жизни. Увещевая народ к покаянию и исправлению греховной жизни, Иоанн проповедовал ему, что крещение водою, совершаемое им, есть только приготовление к принятию Мессии, и что Мессия, имеющий вскоре явиться, есть больший его, Иоанна Крестителя. Господь Иисус Христос пришел вместе с другими на берег Иордана и потребовал крещения от руки Иоанновой. Суровый проповедник пустыни, видя грядущего к нему Иисуса, указал на него народу и ученикам своим, как на Агнца Божия, вземлющего грехи мира. Иоанн продолжал свое высокое служение, являя глубочайшее смирение.
