About Oblique Strategies

Oblique Strategies (subtitled Over One Hundred Worthwhile Dilemmas) is based on a concept created by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt and first published in 1975.

Each card offers an aphorism intended to help artists (particularly musicians) break creative blocks by encouraging lateral thinking.

This free app puts a set of cards at your fingertips at all times. Just in case.

I like the simple interface. I like that the prompts are not too specific & encourage deeper thinking. I also like that there are no ads. However, I wish I could save the prompts that inspire me and organize them in any order I want. I would also like to input my own ideas and be able to put together prompts that will be used as inspiration for a chapter/volume. This will allow me to review the info later and connect the ideas in order to come up with a bigger picture instead of thinking only in fragments.

Beautiful kickstarters to get you going when you run into a block and don't know where to turn. It's geared toward musicians' work, but substitute your own terms that apply to you in the phrases, and you'll still get a lot out of this app. Only improvement I would make is have it optionally run like a slide show.

Do not succumb to the voices tempting you to add this and change that! I used to keep a jar at hand with these prompts scrawled on scraps of paper... This app makes these accessible wherever on-the-go whilst adhering to the simplicity of the original: *a deck of cards*. Thanks for this!

It's kind of like reading affirmations but was originally intended as (some say lol) cryptic guidance for song & music writing. I love the thoughts the prompts bring me. Sometimes on days where I want to throw my hands up in the air w/ frustration I open the app & it provides a new refreshing way of approaching my problem-solving. On a day I'm bored it inspires me to conceive new possibilities for how to spend my time. No permissions. Simple. Tap the screen for a new random prompt. This app is really great for those who like the challenge of a good ponder! Lol

Now that Instagram has unleashed a flood of asinine aphorisms upon our electric world it's great to be able to read something genuinely inspiring and provocative. Angel cards for intellectuals.

The premise is cool. Encourage lateral thinking. Not what this is doing. Some of these statements are downright misleading, discouraging, and not what you should be focusing on while trying to overcome a creative block. Focus on distraction? Emphasize the flaws? What kind of advice is that? Not normally my deal to give a negative review, but to see so many people think that this is beneficial just blows my mind. I mean, it looks nice, I saw a few inspiring things, but they were immediately followed with counter-intuitive nonsense. Sorry, hopefully there is more to the mystery that I'm not seeing.

Love that there are no distractions on screen with the "card" -- no settings, icons, or ads. At first I thought a widget would be great. Having the "next card" appear on home screen whenever device is unlocked, but then again it's probably best to have it "as needed."

1) I love, love, LOVE Brian Eno's music, so this was an instant hit with me. 2) I'm a creative person who occasionally gets stuck in a limited frame of mind, either due to change feeling overwhelming, or feeling limited by other people's desires and whims which don't always match mine--they want to go slowly when I want to get moving on things, or they want to rush me when I'm intuiting that I need to take my time on something. These cards of Eno's help me break through the "crazy-train" cycle of "I-wish-I-could-do-this-but" kind of thinking and help me move *around* my mental obstacles, instead of me thinking that the only way to overcome obstacles is to go over them. 3) The whole point of lateral thinking is to break out of the linear thinking habit that is so ingrained. Sometimes in order to move forward, it helps to step sideways, turn around and look at the problem in a manner completely opposite or even "perpendicular" to that which has been pounded into our heads. 4) On top of all that, the fact that this app is so beautifully simple in design keeps the download size manageable for those of us who can't afford devices with large amounts of space. All in all, a perfect app for those who relish Brian Eno's work, appreciate Zen simplicity, and need a way to bust out of old thinking habits.

Doesn't really do anything for me. Little phrases that can be interpreted as prophetic if you're feeling receptive. That said, I can understand why some might find inspiration here.

This is so lovely. Just sort of wish it would start itself, maybe appear in notifications sometimes or even in daydream as a screensaver ♪ but it's simplicity, ad free of course, is it's timeless magic. Used to have these flashcards.
