About Modern Garden Room Ideas
A fully wired and heated garden room, once constructed, should be furnished with as much care and attention as any other room at home. Consider whether to install blinds or curtains at the windows to provide privacy and make the room cosy. Make sure, too, that you have sufficient storage - particularly important if you are planning to use the structure as a home office or study - and a quality floor. Timber, rubber or matting are all excellent options. If expensive music equipment or computers are to be housed permanently, fit good locks and an alarm. Many specialist garden room companies add these as standard. Given that this is a room for one person, or a few like-minded family members, inject it with plenty of personality. The interior of a modular unit may lack character, so choose to make it pretty, with a floral-upholstered daybed and cushions, or trendy, with pared-down steel and timber furniture and a cool office chair.
If you are in search of an exterior retreat but have limited outside space, consider converting an existing garage. Provided there is a drive (or you can park on the street), the benefits of an extra room will be worth exposing your car to the elements. Many modern houses are built with internal access to the garage - useful on inclement days - and already have plumbing and lighting. If walls are exposed brick and the floor concrete, think about continuing this theme, rather than trying to disguise it, and create a robust, industrial-style workspace, with a trestle-table desk, open steel shelving and white-washed walls and floor.
Whatever the style of outdoor retreat, it's important that it looks good on approach. Careful, imaginative planting goes a long way to integrating the structure into the garden around it. For a traditional timber shed, train a scented creeper or roses up the walls, set it beneath the natural overhang of a bushy tree or fit window boxes beneath the windows. A larger, modern structure may be flanked with rustling bamboo or tall grasses and more architectural-looking shrubs in giant galvanized pots. It can be fun to pick out the route from house to shed with flagstones set into the grass, or - if the shed or garden room is far from view - use a discreet signpost. And don't forget giant umbrellas at each door. It is cosy to sit away from the house and contemplate the sound of the rain, but only if you made it there keeping perfectly dry.
