Tuim ' Canto de Tuim '
O tuim, também chamado popularmente de cuiúba, chuim, periquitinho,
pacu ou papacum (Ceará), periquitinho-de-são-josé (norte da Bahia,) papacu,
tuí e periquito-da-quaresma, é o menor psitacídeo do Brasil.
Nome Científico
Seu nome científico significa: de Forpus = não explicado,
mas provavelmente com origem no (grego) phoreö = possuir; e pous = pé; do (grego) xanthos = amarelo;
e pterux = asa.
Características
É a menor ave da família dos papagaios e periquitos no Brasil, com o corpo todo verde,
um pouco mais escuro nas costas mede 12 centímetros de comprimento e pesa em media 26 gramas.
O bico é pequeno e cinza claro. Possui dimorfismo sexual,
uma característica rara nas espécies brasileiras da família.
O macho é verde-amarelado, com uma grande área azul na superfície inferior da asa e no baixo dorso;
algumas penas na dobra da asa, ombros, parte inferior das costas,
e coberteiras caudais são de uma cor azul-violeta.
Testa, coroa e lados da cabeça mais esverdeados; parte inferior da cauda verde.
A fêmea é totalmente verde, sendo amarelada na cabeça e nos flancos.
A cauda curta forma a silhueta característica e diferencia o tuim do periquito.

Hábitos
Vivem em bandos de até 20 tuins e sempre que pousam, se agrupam em casais.
Habitam as bordas das mata ribeirinha, mata seca e cerradões. Muito ativos,
deslocam-se por grandes áreas, sempre com gritos de contato. Os chamados são agudos,
em tons mais baixos do que os do periquito, além de serem mais curtos.
Qualquer novidade na área de alimentação,
ninho ou dormida é logo saudada pelos gritos de alarme e contato do grupo.
Pousados, ficam camuflados pelas folhas.
É surpreendente ver a quantidade que estava invisível na vegetação,
depois de um grupo surpreendido levantar voo.

Distribuição Geográfica
Ocorre no nordeste, leste e sul do Brasil até o Paraguai e Bolívia,
também no alto Amazonas até o Peru e a Colômbia.

They live in flocks of up to 20 tuins and whenever land, are grouped in pairs.
Inhabit the edges of riparian forest, dry forest, and cerradões. Very active,
move for large areas, always contact cries. The calls are acute,
in lower tones than the parakeet, besides being shorter.
Any novelty in the feeding area,
nest or sleeping is soon greeted by cries of alarm and contact the group.
Resting, they are camouflaged by leaves.
