Our prof gave us only 1 day to memorize hiragana and this app immensely helped me to memorize all of it! Very nice and simple and if mixed with the determination and panic of an upcoming deadline, works wonders!

It's by far the best app for beginners. It may be a bit too simple if you already learned both hiragana and katakana systems, but if you've just started studying them this app is all you need. It has brief explanations of each kana, simple tests without timing and audio with different voices. And the best part: you learn almost with no effort.

Amazing app, very helpful and with a well-designed learning structure. After only a couple of hours I've made great progress. Highly recommended! By the way, this app has a major bug. Every time I exit out and re-enter, it goes to a screen filled with text and crashes until I leave and enter again. It's pretty quick to get over and doesn't affect the content, so I don't dock any points for that, but that's something that needs fixing.

I love nearly all of this app. The format of the quizzes is great and it even includes strokes, if you look for them. My only issue is with the audio, which is fairly inconsistent. Having two voices say each sound is helpful, but the volumes can be very different and there are times when I swear the wrong sound is being given. Nonetheless, this has been a wonderful tool for relearning the kana.

Works well! Never been able to read Japanese before. Helps if you know how to speak it a little bit but this is definitely useful! Would be nice if tests were specific to the section you're selling tidying instead of that and everything else you've learned to that point but still very good!

I like this app a lot!! I am learning Japanese by myself and it is really helpful and the material is easy to understand. Animations don't work for me though (and my phone is a 2016 model samsung so idk why) and also one quiz from hiragana part included a question from the next chapter.

by K####:

I love it!! It's helpful and always has very useful information. Unlike a lot of other apps that don't help you study and just give you the information then quiz you, Tengugo let's you review quiz material, try the quizzes as many times as you'd like even after you've passed it. You can always go back and focus on areas you're unsure of and you never have to worry about learning at a pace you're uncomfortable with. I highly suggest doing the quizzes over and over again until you can consistently get 100%'s, then leave for a day or two, come back and see if you still get consistent hundred percents then move on, otherwise study some more. You always get to hear the pronunciation which is really helpful, this way there is no need to worry about mispronouncing them.

If you are whiling to learn japanese writing, the kana will be the easiest part, and this app make it just like that. See a few letters in order per day, if possible, rewriting them somewhere else, and in no time you'll have mastered the kana writing for sure...

I plan to seriously study this language and was pleased by how well-structured it is. However there are some terrible formatting problems that meant I had to struggle to connect a description of a pronunciation to the hiragana idiograms

U70%
by U####:

Seems a little intimidating at first, but when you start getting in the swing of things it becomes much easier. Provides a lot of information and explanation. The only thing I can think to add would be vocal recognition to help with pronunciation. I would recommend to anyone who is learning Japanese.

This app teaches me to remember all the kana with all the test it has in it, but it's kinda creepy...... look at that tengu... When you complete a certain amount of test, it will suprised you and play a loud sound that makes me jump, and a big picture of a tengu will show up.........

NihongoShark blog got me here, and I am definitely learning quick. Maybe some of the English example in how to pronounce them are a bit iffy, but the sounds clips are there so it's good. All the content is here, it's only optional to remove ads.

K70%
by K####:

I like that it explained the way syllables work and some insight into kanji hiragana and katakana as well as the quizzes charts and writing, but every time I exit the app if I'm away from it for more than a few minutes I start to see ERROR at the top of the screen followed by all the statements and their respective lines in the code were the view crashed. Then I click on the screen and the screen goes blank. I get around this by going into my phone's settings and force quit the app. Then it starts normally

K70%
by K####:

This app really make things easy to learn. Very lucid presentation of contents. We can learn new alphabets with an ease. The tests are also good.5 stars from my side. I have also bought the kanji after learning from this app. Hope soon will Japanese and then very less need to use subtitles for anime

O70%
by O####:

I'm using it for the quizzes to test and review my knowledge. It's not very useful for learning the kana, as it doesn't explain stroke order or any memory devices to aid learning. Use it as a supplement with other learning materials. Good for quickly reviewing kana on the go.

by K####:

Changing my 5 star to a 4. Great app, very helpful. Only problem I have had, is on the quizzes I'll be asked to name the highlighted kana, but there won't be any highlighted kana displayed; only the english translation of the word the kana is used in. Other than that, it is a great learning tool!

Q70%
by Q####:

Really great for self-studying and practicing. I've learned a lot already and have only been on the app a couple of minutes. They have the sound of all the characters so you can practice saying them while you wright. They also have quizzes that you can take as many times as you want and they break the characters up into lessons so you learn 5 at a time, although the adds can be a little annoying because they flash at the top of the screen, so much so that I end up covering the top of my screen.

The quiz is the most fun part of the game, makes heaps easier to memorize the pronunciation. That I feel what it's lacking is to put those characters to basic conversations, so you can learn to read and to speak Nihongo?

I started an online Japanese course, and I was having so much trouble learning Hiragana! This has helped me so much with memorization and writing, with its approach of only introducing a few at a time. Had it not been for this app, I probably would have dropped out of the course. This app is so very helpful.

Q70%

Great to use. My only advice would be to introduce material design and perhaps use the font for characters that are shown under "writing" rather than the blocky one.

And very good app. It hasn't giving me any use and I have learn quite a lot ... I like it star's with the basics things

J70%

Very simple and easy to use system. Does exactly what it tries to do. The only annoyance is the non-invasive advertisements around which you can easily pay a small amount to get rid of. they're no bother to me though.

Q70%
by Q####:

When learning how to pronounce the kana, do NOT pay attention to the comparisons to English words. They are totally inaccurate and will make your Japanese sound awful. For example, it'll say "せ is pronounced like the word say" which is completely wrong if you listen to the actual Japanese person in the recording. Just use the sound clips provided. Other than that the app is great, but this is such a massive and dangerous oversight (which is systematic throughout the app, not just せ) that I had to dock 2。

This app includes just what I need to start my journey with Japanese (I also have Hangul). I enjoy how every aspect of the Kana is broken down into chapters in such an efficient way. The brief history is included, and the quizzes not only test you on what you just learned in your newest chapter, but what you've learned in all previous chapters. The charts are amazingly useful, and include the pronunciations AND stroke orders for writing! I truly enjoy and appreciate this app. I've learned so much!!! 5/5

Thought it would be like others, boring or complicated. it's actually very well done. My gf, myself and my son are using it.

I really enjoy this app, one of the few that actually works. The only thing I wish it had is a way to practice drawing the symbols in the app.

It freezes on my Samsung Galaxy S4 running android 5.0.1 sometimes. But pretty good otherwise!

Been doing this for 2 days and already made a huge progress. Perfect to learn in small 5 minute steps on every little break you get during your day

T70%

I have a textbook and a workbook but they don't help me refresh my memory very well. This app is even teaching me combinations I haven't read about yet. The quizzes also fit well with the immediate feedback I am used to from games. Very nice and simple.

Y70%
by Y####:

Easy to use. Has audio for everything, and writing guides. My favorite part is that the quizzes are cumulatove, so you're tested on all of the things you've learned up to that point which really helps keep it fresh.

Q70%

It is amazing. I have already learned half of the hirigana in 2 days thanks to this app and im sure that others may be able to learn faster! The only critique i have is that for some of the word examples it gives you the answer when explaining what it is. For example, if the word is さけ, and underlines さto ask what it is in romanji, in brackets it has (sake) which gives the answer away. I better way of describing sake would be -A popular japanese drink- or something along those lines. I still love this app!!

U70%

This kind of app suits me well since it escalates according to the new kanjis learned

Very fast and simple you can do one correction : you have translated is there water? In Japanese to mizu -------- ka? No need for question mark there.

I'm only on K Hiragana, but I'm learning. I want to learn japanese for my trip to Japan, so that I can at least read things and communicate a bit without clutching a phrasebook for life. It's great for people who want to get the basics down and not feel pressure to speed up like sometimes in a class environment. Even though the app does what it says and I'm learning, I wish it could incorporate games to help remember, then it would be perfect. No need to find another app then.

Q70%
by Q####:

I love this app. I love the quizzes which mixes it up with the character itself, sound, and romaji to help retain the info. It caters a lot to my way of learning. I find it impressive they manage to do this on an app and not a website. Only thing keeping it from a 5 is the occasional error of I leave it running in the background and go back to it crashes with a bunch of code everywhere. Not major but it is a minor inconvenience so it is still an amazing app.

A very useful app for however that wants to learn Kana! If you focus, i think that by the moment you complete the App, you will have learned to read and write Kana. The only think i dont like that much, is the pronunciation examples that the app gives you. Some of them are not very accurate. Other than that... Nice app! I recommend it!

Q70%
by Q####:

Two bugs I noticed were that if you leave the app and come back to it later without closing it, it will crash. Also, on the quizzes, if there is an audio question and you answer it before the audio clip ends, the audio clip will continue into the next question. If you have multiple audio questions in a row and you answer them quickly then it gets confusing. With that said, this app has been a great supplement to learning Kana and I definitely recommend it
