The Globe and Mail: News

It works but just barely. The web Mobile version on a browser is visually better and is about the same speed. Font options are too small with story summaries similarly small and non adjustable. On a phone layout is good. On a tablet it's rediculasly large and difficult to navigate. There are several excellent examples of good app design for news such as the Guardian and the Globe it seems is still trying to reinvent the square wheel.

The latest version of this application is a huge improvement. Very easy to navigate. Intuitive and user friendly. If you'd always liked reading "The Globe" but hated the reading experience on your android device, you can now finally subscribe without reservations. I know I will. If they could only integrate the printed version of the paper into the app like the "Washington Post" does, it would be perfect. Other than that, I highly recommend. Well done!!!

This review is to the new 5.0 release. It appears offline reading is broken now. The option to download sections to your phone in offline reading mode is also gone. I also very frustrated with the new overhaul release. I love globe and mail and their content but the app itself is not working how I would expect it to. I can no longer download articles to my phone to read offline. When trying to open the app offline and clicking on an article, the entire app crashes and close. Usually new releases don't take away the number 1 features which customers enjoy.

The offline reading is not working, which is critical for my 1/2 hour ride on the subway in the morning. Very disappointing they can't get this right. Also, I can't seem to find the Market Index changes by going to Business or Investing Sections. At this point seriously considering cancelling my subscription....SOOOO not worth it at this point.

The recent update to the app is great. It was long overdue. There are still bugs to work out. The share, text size and save widgets don't reliably come up and search leads to mobile-site pages which are no longer logged in and in which the share buttons don't work. One is still asked to log in while already logged into the app, which is annoying.

The new update is a massive improvement. I had all but stopped reading the Globe on mobile because of the old app. But this changes that. It looks great, it's easy to use, and most importantly it actually updates with new content. Thank you!

Terrible app. A step backwards from previous G & M app. No market ticker (TSX, DJIA, NASDAQ) on new app. More often than not, hyperlinks to articles are broken. Poor performance of offline reading function.

New version has more and larger ads in the way of the contact. My stock quote feature still won't give me the one year consensus target price but it is still ok as an app. I am a subscriber and will continue to be so I guess I think it is worth the price.

The new app is brilliant and beautiful, but needs certain basic features to be fixed. I am a registered subscriber of the Globe and the Mail. However as it turns out, I am not able to bookmark all articles/opinions. While I could bookmark some, but not all. And this is rather annoying because that means I get only one chance to read an article and cannot get back to it for reference with ease. Secondly, the same problem applies to sharing as well. I can share some articles, but not all. Third, selecting and copying text - I am not able to select and/or copy text from most articles. I might often come across a new word and might wanna look it up, or a brilliant quite or important statistic - but a long tap on the screen does not select anything. Please fix these 3 issues and trust me - this is going to be the best news app in the Canadian app store. Brilliant opinion pieces, well edited articles and beautiful app interface.

Fast and clean for the internet age, but with the thorough editing, solid research and most importantly great journalists of a national newspaper. One big shameful exception: Columns should be more clearly marked as pieces of fiction instead of being mixed in with journalistic articles.

Updated but still terrible. Many times I've gone to save or share an article but I'm not able to. Impossible to search for articles as well. Web site is much better.

Ok but not excellent. Do not like paywall at all. Getting service help is not easy. One you get a hang of the app, then easy to navigate. App does not allow to write comments n this is a big flaw.

Offline reading appears to be broken in the new 5.0 release. This is incredibly frustrating. I very much enjoy reading the Globe and Mail but am no longer table to read the content while offline on my commute. The app crashes whenever trying to access content offline. In addition the approach of curating and saving each specific article before going offline is cumbersome and impractical. The experience of downloading pre-set sections for offline reading on the old app was efficient and effective. It is a shame this capability is no longer present in v5.0 and as a result this undermines the value of a Globe unlimited subscription.

The last version had stopped working altogether for a month or so, so I used the G&M Web page. Now it works again which is good. I don't need offline with a 2GB data plan.

Paying for news articles is ridiculous in 2017. I'll never do it when I can get it for free elsewhere. What a poor, misguided model.

I don't like the new 5.0 version of this app. The investing section doesn't even show the market changes. The articles that talk about specific stocks used to have the stock name in bold or underline so it was easy to skim an article. The new version has the same font for stock names making it harder to read efficiently.

The new version is much better than the earlier one I reviewed. Only problem is the app and the web site repeat many articles as you go down the page.

I hate it. I loved the older version when you can do offline reading. downloading individual news is cumbersome.

Swiping left or right to other news stories is too sensitive, especially if your finger is over an ad. Many accidental swipes horizontally.

They finally updated the app and it appears to have fixed most of the issues (excluding offline mode). What did they add? Popup ads for paid subscribers. Come on people. Have a little respect for the people funding you organization. There shouldn't be any ads for subscribers in the first place.

i am a paid subscriber yet at least one and often two articles return error messages when clicked on. Also, having to keep endlessly clicking on "show next 2 articles, just to see further story offerings is needlessly work. Reminds me of the Web circa 1995, but at least there was a reason then (data bandwidth) .

Much better than the older one. My only complaint is that it randomly switches to the next article when you are scrolling up and down, it is too sensitive to the right and left scrolling motion.

New version looks nice but is pretty basic compared to the best news apps. Links from the headline widget often don't work. I hope this is only the first part of the overhaul.

Should be better. Seems no summary stock market indices on top as before. Hard to find market updates. Some news stuff stale.

Clicking on Horoscopes produces a random selection of stories. Makes me wonder what else is being left out of the pages I'm viewing.

Not a fully functional app from my perspective. Sometimes can only get news headlines but not stories. Keep working on it please

Love the new look. HATE that the stock market/oil price/ currency exchange rates are gone!!

The offline reading mode is gone, this is really annoying as I read articles on the subway.

For the 5.0 version, offline reading does the work as it claims. No download feature. Not all articles can be save (not sure if this was intended even as I am a paying subscriber). Visually more appealing than previous versions.

Works OK. Desperately needs a dark theme - some of us like to read the news before bed, but I can't do that with such a bright background. Also, why can't we access the article comments on the app?

Can no longer download for offline reading. It was the best part of the app. How can i go back? The app has always been poor. Surprising for a company like this that is trying to get subscribers. If you want people to pay create something good.

Fall 2017 version is an incredible data hog. Nice to use on wi-fi, but utterly impractical with mobile data.

Huge improvement in this version, thank you (I can actually access all the breaking news and "what we know so far" type articles). The scrolling motion sometimes gets picked up by the app as a sideways swipe to change articles, feels a little glitchy there but overall, thank you, keep the improvements coming!

Works great on Android. (Crashes & refreshes all the time on my iPad but that's a different flavour of the app ;) )

This updated app is not used friendly at all. The other app could be reviewed quickly for interesting stories. This one has poor navigation

Font selection is inconsistent. For some stories you can specify font size, for others you can't. Story headlines for the same day are often repeated, especially after way too large ads. Old items, sometimes months old, show up with new headlines. Looks like the're trying to fill content.

Still not comfortable with new version. I have complained about no markets and was told to go on the internet. I so now I go the National Post. So I don't check G&M too often

I'm a subscriber but will cancel since offline reading has been unaccountably eliminated in the latest version, making it next to useless.

Finally an update. The app looks great now and works smoothly. The previous version was just awful.
