About Typist: A Quick Typing Test

Update: 1.9 is now out!

See how fast you can type with a quick typing test! The Typist: A Quick Typing Test includes 10 different typing tests, with options for 1, 2, or 3 minute tests. Features charts of your typing speed results so you can see your progress over time, leaderboards/high score list support, and detailed results (words per minute, errors, letters with the most errors). NOTE: The Typist does not work in landscape mode on mobile phones (it does work on HDPI tablets/phablets) due to the way Android displays the keyboard and input box in landscape. Sorry, this is not fixable!

FAQ

What exactly is The Typist?

- The Typist is a fun romp through the world of competitive typing! Ok, no, it's actually a typing test app that lets you test your typing speed with texts from popular books. It's a good way to see how fast you can type on your phone or tablet, test out different kinds of keyboard layouts, or track your typing improvement over time.

Why are my typing test scores so low?!

- The Typist: Typing Tests calculates your final words per minute typing score by taking your raw wpm typing speed and subtracting any errors that you made. This can result in some pretty low scores as every mistake is a 1 wpm penalty. Thankfully, your score can't go below 0 or we'd have a riot here in Typing Land!

Making typing errors in real life generally means that you have to go back and fix them. So The Typist uses this penalty mechanic as a way to make things a little more realistic.

Are there any permissions required?

- There are four permissions required by The Typist: internet, network state, Google Play billing, and startup notification. This version of The Typist is ad-supported (boo!) and needs the first two to serve ads, and billing permission is necessary to allow purchasing the full version. Startup notification is needed for the optional daily notification feature. It does not need access to your contacts, location, or your Facebook account.

Can The Typist improve my typing speed?

- While not scientifically proven, I'd like to say yes! The only way to improve your typing speed is to practice - and by taking a typing test or two a day, you should see an improvement in your typing speed over time. The Typist does include a nice chart of your past test results, so you can view your progress. There's also a high score list/leaderboard to give you some extra motivation!

Is The Typist usable in landscape mode?

- Yes and no. Landscape mode on phones isn't supported (because there isn't enough space to fit everything - NOT SOMETHING I CAN FIX!), but it will work on any HDPI+ (high dpi) tablet (Nexus 7, Nexus 10, etc) device.

Custom Keyboard. (ex swiftkey). Also has multiple parameters to effectively change your play experience. Don't expect too much of the interface as its pretty much black text on a white background. Would be helpful to have the option of changing text size. Overall good app!

X70%
by X####:

But the problem is, if you take 3 minutes and make 10 mistakes, you get a lower score as if you go 1 minute and make 5 mistakes... Just because it simply gets subtracted. It should count in the length of the test somehow.

N70%
by N####:

I made the leaderboard with 59 wpm at 5:50 p.m. and my high score is no where on the leaderboards. I downloaded this application in order to test my agility using two thumbs. I typed around 80 wpm using all fingers and thumbs with 0 errors, and 65 on this app with 99% accuracy. How do you figure 59 wpm with 66 wpm without errors in 60 seconds = 99% accuracy and deducted from 65 to 59?

X70%
by X####:

Perfect for testing keyboards. There are no compatibility issues whatsoever, but custom tests are desired. I've tried a few other apps but they all have compatibility issues with keyboards that automatically capitalize. The only real problem I have with this app is that it has not updated the Google Play Games scores since I got 5 WPM on my first try.

R70%
by R####:

Fantastic app with just the right features but not any bloat. It doesn't nag you for buying the upgrade or spam with notifications. Many of the poor reviews are really just people having problems with their own movie keyboard and aren't a result of the app. 5/5.

X70%
by X####:

At first it crash but when I turn off the land cap mode it stop making crash. But maybe isolated issue maybe. But fine to me.

W70%
by W####:

liked this app. I would say that its more for practice and improving your speed. Its not so much for beginners who are wanting to learn how to type on a keyboard. Like hand placement and what not. But if you are just looking to improve your wpm then this is a good app to use.

X70%
by X####:

I suggest allowing user to fix error words with cursor (mostly because it's habit for fast mobile typists and messes up rhythm to not permit this)

X70%
by X####:

I wanted to use this on my phone to speed up my phone typing but it does not allow you to rotate the phone to have the larger keyboard. This rendered it useless for me.

P70%
by P####:

I have had no bugs/crashes yet and have used it for a week or so. True, it does re-use the same tests many times but that is fine with me, as it is still helping me to type better/faster, and repetition can help.

X70%
by X####:

It took me soo long to just find a typing game even though I love typing because I have one of those tablets that turn into a laptop with the keyboard.

D70%
by D####:

But the problem is, if you take 3 minutes and make 10 mistakes, you get a lower score as if you go 1 minute and make 5 mistakes... Just because it simply gets subtracted. It should count in the length of the test somehow.

D70%

I waned something that would test my speed from my own words. It is difficult to read and Swype at the same time. I'm 65wpm on computer, but only 27 (no err) on here? I'm faster than that! But I need to see the keys on this galaxy S4. Not the words I have to type. Make sense?

D70%
by D####:

The test impairs my keyboard's ability to undo auto corrected words. This is an issue as the keyboard will continue to correct names and not being able to undo the autocorrect results in me not being able to get past the fifth or sixth world in the test. Great concept, but execution needs work.

D70%
by D####:

I am using this with a tablet + bluetooth keyboard. Works fantastic. I just hope I don't smash my keyboard trying to break my old record.... Good stuff... 5 STARS!

D70%
by D####:

It is not a test of actual typing functionality. You cannot go back and correct words, and it does not play well with swype. I was curious about how fast i type on my phone in normal day to day situations but i guess i will have to use a different app to find out

D70%
by D####:

This app is neat and well designed but it doesn't let me use it in landscape mode. As that is how I usually type I couldn't see my true typing speed.

D70%
by D####:

Awesome... But the highlighted blue word is not accurate...and the app sometimes shows wrong scores! Overall loved it! But 5 stars for bug fixes!

S70%
by S####:

i got 36wpm zero erros on android.... not baaaddd..... 35onaveragethoubutzeroerrorr nice. tq. it would be better if the word we type in stay in middle instead.

C70%
by C####:

Whenever you misspelled a word, it would not take in the next word you used, so then it works skip a word and you did not know until you were 5 word behind. This is kinda difficult.

D70%
by D####:

It took me soo long to just find a typing game even though I love typing because I have one of those tablets that turn into a laptop with the keyboard.

D70%
by D####:

This is a great tool to speed up your typing on mobile and rely less on auto correct to do the heavy lifting for you . I have seen my typing increase about 10% since using this app . AWESOME!

D70%
by D####:

I find that occasionally switching to use punctuation is quite irritating but still a good app nonetheless.

B70%
by B####:

Not to be mean but like it is great but whenever there is a sentence and one min like skip seconds. Another thing I mostly did the whole sentence and it give me a really bad score.

N70%
by N####:

Useless for testing speed using the Swype keyboard.

D70%
by D####:

unless I'm missing something.. this doesn't appear to support screen rotation which would render a larger keyboard and allow me to type like a demon.

C70%
by C####:

While checking each word from paragraph, if i skip one word, all the errors add up and for one mistake I got 44 errors

M70%
by M####:

If you have a keyboard optimized for another language, like me, your result will become worse than you were actually able to type. It could be solved simply by adding a user defined text.

O70%
by O####:

I wanted to use this on my phone to speed up my phone typing but it does not allow you to rotate the phone to have the larger keyboard. This rendered it useless for me.

M70%
by M####:

This application tests one on prose, taken from popular books, which forces one to use proper grammar and punctuation. The reason it did not make a five star rating from me is the lack of variation. I've completed the test a mere handful of times and I've been handed the same paragraph from "A Study in Scarlet" often enough to be able to memorise it. It gets old fast.

P70%
by P####:

Has so much promise but unfortunately balks at auto correct functions, rendering it nearly useless as a good evaluation the myriad of keyboards available to android users. I will say that it's much better than other apps of it's type.

M70%
by M####:

Like how it tells your wpm & errors but instead of having a timer.Just let people do the stories & see how long it takes to finish.

M70%
by M####:

Since a long time its not updated... So, expected to develop this app soon...

X70%

V70%
by V####:

It's a great app. Except for the commas and periods and all the punctuation. There should be a way to turn it off. It's great in every other way

M70%
by M####:

Great looking app! Perfect for testing my typing speed, even works well with custom keyboards. Recommended.

M70%
by M####:

They're there first-time.and I am glad.

M70%
by M####:

I like this one best and I think I have tried them all. I like it because 1) I can change the time 2) it keeps my top scores 3) I can change the fond size 4) I type real sentences. Hope you make the reading text turn red upon error. I often don't see the writing text change to red. Also showing cpm would be nice.

M70%
by M####:

This Is a Good App and l get a Chance to keep practicing my Typing.

M70%
by M####:

Many nice features but cannot be used in landscape on my device - which leaves a big hole if trying to compare keyboards (which was my intended use). No good for me then, could be useful testing or practice if you type primarily in portrait and don't care about landscape use.
