SCORTEN Scale

SCORTEN is an illness severity score that has been developed to predict mortality in SJS and TEN cases. One point is scored for each of seven criteria present at the time of admission. The SCORTEN criteria are:

Age >40 years
Presence of a malignancy (cancer)
Heart rate >120 beats per minute
Initial percentage of epidermal detachment >10%
Serum urea level >10 mmol/L (Serum Urea > 28 mg/dL)
Serum glucose level >14 mmol/L (>252 mg/dL)
Serum bicarbonate level <20 mmol/L (<20 mEq/L)


The risk of dying from SJS/TEN depends on the score.

SCROTEN 0 - Predicted mortality is 1.2%
SCROTEN 1 - Predicted mortality is 3.9%
SCROTEN 2 - Predicted mortality is 12.2%
SCROTEN 3 - Predicted mortality is 32.4%
SCROTEN 4 - Predicted mortality is 62.2%
SCROTEN 5 - Predicted mortality is 85%
SCROTEN 6 - Predicted mortality is 95.1%
SCROTEN 7 - Predicted mortality is 98.5%
