uPort is at its core a system for self-sovereign digital identity. What this means is that instead of relying on a central third-party identity provider the user is in complete control of their own digital identity. The user has ultimate control over their profile data and the actions of their digital self. By using encryption they can also selectively disclose their personal data to counterparties.

Other users can digitally sign the attributes of a user using “reputational attestations.” This creates a “Web of Trust” if the signatures are by peers, or if authorities sign the attributes this can be used for KYC in the banking sector or for Certificate Authority chains of trust in a business setting
