The original course was laid out by Old Tom Morris in 1897 and as you will imagine is a course full of character. Old Tom describing the land when he first surveyed it as ‘admirably adapted for golfing purposes and in such an admirable situation’. Kendal has many distinctive holes providing challenges for the most proficient or the higher handicap golfer.
Nearly all visitors to the club remember the 17th hole. a short Par 3 of less than 130 yards, the tee shot is played from an elevated tee over a limestone rock outcrop, known locally as the battleship, to a small but receptive green. Many a medal score has been wrecked on this infamous hole.
