What are users saying about Yik Yak

YikYak used to be worth having, but they have made too many core changes. The initial idea of the app - and the only reason it took off - was anonymity. When handles were added, it allowed you to toggle on and off your anonymity, which worked well. Anyone who wanted to build a reputation could, and those who would rather remain anonymous could. By removing the ability to toggle off your handle, YikYak has changed the core idea of the app. I currently see no reason to use it over Twitter or Facebook.

by Z####:

This app was great until the update. Simple yet fun at the same time. Im in college and since the update of this app no is using this app. Yik yak used to be what everyone would talk about, and there would be hundreds of entries and users daily. Was fun looking at people's funny posts and comments. Now the app is dead at my university due to the changes made by the designers of this app. I tell you that it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that the ratings have plummeted and fan base has dropp

N70%
by N####:

It's only because it was a great app to post to the community anonymously but now there is a profile and handle? Might as well stick with Facebook. And they don't even let you change your handle after 2 or 3. My friend played a prank and changed my handle and now I can't change it back.

N70%
by N####:

Yik Yak used to be a great, and anonymous, app. With the addition of handles, you had the option to add a bit of name recognition to your posts, but it wasn't required. Now that they have removed the option to hide your handle, in a half-hearted attempt to be more like Facebook or twitter, or whatever, they have taken away what made the app special. The ability to be truly anonymous.

N70%
by N####:

I don't like the recent changes at all. Herds were one of the cool things about yik yak and I liked being able to comment on things happening at school while I'm not there. I'm not so worried about anonymity but I did like it when we could choose to display our handles. Why can't apps stay in their own lane?

G70%
by G####:

Yik yak had a really good idea when they first came out. Their ability to post anonymously in your area or globally made for an entertaining time. Some where, they made a decision to become more comparable to the likes of twitter or facebook. At the rate of changes yik yak is making, the experience is changing as well. Basically, its not worth the download anymore.

N70%
by N####:

Look. I love the yak team, they've always had great customer support and I previously gave this app five stars. Buy this latest update quite literally killed Yik Yak. It's like all those movies where the guy goes to bed and wakes up and everyone's dead and the place is deserted. That guy is me, and the place is Yik Yak. After this update, there are no herds, no sorting, no anonymity, forced handles, and no college recognition. This app was incredible. Keyword WAS.

N70%
by N####:

Yik yak took away everything that made it great and made people want to use it in the first place. I really want to know what they were thinking with this change. I live 30 minutes away from my campus so now i cant keep connected with my herd when I'm not here for classes. And I don't even want to post anymore without the option for anonymity.

N70%
by N####:

I used to love this app. It was a great way to casually interact with other students on campus. Being able to see your herd even when you're away from campus. Sharing experiences, asking quick questions, sharing advice, campus inside jokes, etc. All while being able be anonymous. Now the forced profiles takes away from everything. We can't conncect with our campus unless we're on it. And we can't even see top yaks from our herd. The app lost all of its uniqueness.

I70%
by I####:

Claims to make you feel part of the community, but removed the herd function so now I can't interact with my community while I'm on away or on break from uni. Without anonymity I can no longer talk about anything I'd be uncomfortable identified with, so gone are the days of people seeking help or guidance or just company. They were doing so well and then they sacrificed it for a more standard social media experience.

N70%
by N####:

I used to love this app, the ability to talk to people in my herd while away from Uni and talking ANONYMOUSLY online was great. Hell I didn't even mind handles but removing both these features and pressuring people to link their social media to their profile is just terrible. Take the app back one year and I'd give it 5 stars. Bring herds back, make handles optional and most importantly, listen to your customers because you done goof lads

N70%
by N####:

Originally yik yak was a very cool, innovative and unique take on traditional social media. As they added handles and profiles this slowly went away, but the anonymous factor was still there so it kept the app alive. With the latest update, they force all users to show handles on all posts and comments, completely ridding the app of anonymity. The devs did add back in the herd feature, which was a good choice. Now they just need to add anonymity back and maybe they can save this dying app.

C70%
by C####:

This was a fantastic app. It thrived on its anonymous userbase. The latest update killed it though, essentially sterilizing all that made it interesting enough to garner such a dedicated group of users. It is now just a shell of the app it used to be, basically just twitter based on location, masquerading as something different and good.

K70%
by K####:

Now it's not. It's that simple. You have gotten rid of everything great about the app. Last year this app was the place I went(being somewhat of an introvert) to connect to new people around me. I posted often and absolutely loved the experience it brought. The anonymity of the app allowed for us, the users to voice our opinions and thoughts without the worry of being judged. That is gone, and so is my use for this app. I hope you guys decide to revert back to your old platform. Uninstaling.

N70%
by N####:

This app was fantastic my freshman year. The app stuck to it's unique character: anonymity and community based. When profiles were mandated and My Herd removed, Yik Yak lost everything that made it such a wonderful app, and now it'll just be a memory. Thanks for the good times, Yik Yak, but I can't stick around anymore.

K70%
by K####:

Long ago the herds lived in harmony. Then everything changed when the developers attacked. Only the rollback, master of all the updates, could stop them; but when the world needed him most he vanished. 100 yaks have passed and my brother and I discovered the new rollback, a young change called "Old Yik Yak", and although his changing skills are great he has a lot to learn before he's ready to save anyone. But I believe Old Yik Yak can save the world.

N70%
by N####:

The app started off as an anonymous, cool app and then worsened with updates. The whole anonymity aspect was taken away, and the app won't let you use it if you live by any non-college campus. So if you live in NYC and go to let's say a CUNY school, you'll probably be blocked because of the ubiquity of high schools and middle schools. It started off great, and now it has been ruined. Great work, Yik Yak.

N70%
by N####:

Nobody in my town uses the app. Yik Yak hit its peak but now its a water downed version of every other social media app... I can not connect with my college that I graduated from anymore because I moved away. Bring back the features that made me download the app in the first place

D70%
by D####:

We were attracted to Yikyak for the anonymity, for the ability to keep up with our herds when we were at home. The introduction of handles was good, the inability to hide your handle is not. What made Yikyak so good was the unfiltered nature granted by our anonymity to say what we wanted, but with every update you take us away from where we want to be. Idea for next update, give back herds, give back handle toggle. Stop taking away in updates, add to the app don't take away from it.

N70%
by N####:

2014 - 2015 were the days Yik Yak truly shined, and attracted many users including myself who joined early 2015. It was local and anonymous, I think that's why I found it interesting. Apart from the herd and comment icon updates, every other update made me use it less and less, until finally I think I'm done with it. Introducing handles was probably the worst decision they could have come up with, especially now that you're forced to use it. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. Bye

F70%
by F####:

I used to love it but each update has just taken away the things I loved the most one by one. This most recent update means I'll probably be deleting the app if I don't see a change asap! Such a shame... the unique features of herds and anonymity which made it so great are gone

R70%
by R####:

You've completely obliterated everything that made your app unique and great. You're getting thousands of one star reviews because you've taken away the reasons people used Yik Yak instead of other social media platforms. You are shooting yourself in the foot. Fix it quick.

N70%
by N####:

When I first got the app, being able to post anonymously was really cool, especially around my college campus. Now with the new update all of the anonymity is gone and we're stuck using handles and profiles. And removing herds? I don't want to see people trying to hook up and sell drugs, I want to see my fellow college students. Thank you yik yak for ruining the fun. EDIT TO ORIGINAL: Yak had added back the herd feature, it's definitely a bit better now, still has the issue of not being as anonymous.

D70%
by D####:

Yik Yak is just a slow shambling corpse of it's former self. The biggest draw was the anonymity and now that's completely gone. You could be whoever you wanted to be, some people were bellends, some people were lovely but it was your choice. This has now been taken away. Hope you're happy with yourself Yik Yak.

K70%
by K####:

I used to love this app. It was a lot of fun and I made a lot of friends but since the update the app has severely gone downhill. You don't have the option to post anonymously anymore and you can't have a herd. Those were the two main things that yik yak was based around. Even while living right next to my university the amount of posts have drastically decreased because no one wants to post with their handles on. Undo the update and I will love the app again

G70%
by G####:

After the most recent wave of updates yik yak simply isn't yik yak anymore. The devs seem to want to create their own Facebook/Twitter platform but there's no demand for such an app. The depth and interest of the community was killed by the profile updates and now yik yak is dead...gg

N70%
by N####:

Being anonamous was the main thing about this app. With the addition of handles you basically ruined it. It was a good idea at first WHEN it was optional. Being able to chat privately with a specific person if you wanted to was a good addition. But now since the handles are mandatory it has really gone down hill. Also the ability to have a herd so that you could post to people at home from away from home was a brilliant idea. Why remove it?

N70%
by N####:

I am glad my herd is back as not having it would make the app pointless to me. The app works good with no issues but I think you guys should allow us to use our username or not. It gives people the option to truly be anonymous. Love the concept of the app but quit trying to "fix" what isn't broken.

N70%
by N####:

If I could give less than one star, I would. I have to congratulate Yik Yak, however, for for cleanly and efficiently shooting themselves in the foot and shoving their head up their ass simultaneously. This app is something, it's just not the Yik Yak that college students used.

G70%
by G####:

This used to be one of my favorite apps when I was at school, it was great to have a place to talk about what was going on around school, sharing opinions and thoughts, and being able to tell people what was happening on campus. Now im deleting it because of all the updates that take away from what it originally was: anonymous fun. With every update it gets more confusing and it seems like they're trying to make it twitter.

N70%
by N####:

App has gone downhill significantly recently. Forced use of handles will keep people from fully expressing themselves, which was the original draw to the app. Already the once busy local feed has died off as the majority of users have jumped ship to other anonymous apps. If we had wanted this, we would have just stuck with Twitter.

N70%
by N####:

The anonymity of YikYak is what made YikYak popular. It was an entertaining popular outlet for colleges across the US, solely because it allowed you to hide behind your little colored object. If I wanted a posting site with profiles, I would have used Twitter. Whoever thought this was a good idea, should be fired. Rule of thumb, don't try to be something you're not.

G70%
by G####:

I've had this app for a few years and been with it though the updates. The most useful updates were the herds you could set and post too, the tags that showed who was the OP and who was not in comments, and even the handles. Now it seems the anonymous aspects of the app are all gone. The hot list is gone. You can only post to the local area and not a set herd. The handles are forced and no longer an option as well. Once upon a time this app was good. Now it's just a waste of time.

W70%
by W####:

This app is so far removed from what it once was. The app has been going downhill for quite a while now with each new update bringing unwanted change. What happened to being an anonymous feed in a local area and maybe in your separate herd? This app was a blast in college, but I will be uninstalling it now for good.

N70%
by N####:

Yikyak took away the one thing that attracted users, anonymity. If I wanted to use Twitter I would, but for you to make an app for one thing and do a complete 180° is insane. You've lost quite a bit of your user base and I know many of them switching to another new anon app. Why fix something that isn't broken. This is almost as bad as Instagram making stories

N70%
by N####:

This app used to be fun when everything was actually anonymous and it had top yaks. Now its turning into some wannabe twitter. The whole appeal of this app was the anonymity, to take that way defeats the purpose of why people actually downloaded it. So many people used to use this app at my university, now its dead. Great job yik yak, you killed your own app

N70%
by N####:

Why the sudden change in ethos? If this was designed for college and uni students to be anonymous and share thoughts then why expose them. Please bring back some of the old features (my herd, removing handles) to keep the users happy. Thanks.

E70%
by E####:

Yak is officially been turned into a garbage social media app. If i could give less then a star i would. Developer removed everything that made the app interesting and replaced it with forced profiles, wannabe facebook aspects and a #new worthless local herd concept. App has been deleted, i won't be back.

N70%
by N####:

Not having the option of anonymity defeats the purpose.. Maybe we didn't want a certain question to be associated with our handle. This new Yak is lame and hardly anybody uses it anymore. It has significantly been reduced to maybe 20 people compared to almost the entire campus.

N70%
by N####:

I loved how different yik yak was. You could post anonymously, see top posts in your area, and I really think there was a sense of community. Then the handles appeared and yak slowly declined. Now you MUST post with a handle which destroys the beautiful anonymity that gave Yik Yak that market edge. Guess I'll be looking for a new app to spend hours on.
