الوساوس هو حديث النّفس بأمرٍ خفيّ بغية ردّها عن الإيمان وإيقاعها في الشّرك أو جرّها إلى المُحرّمات والمُنكرات، فالشّيطان يُوسوس للإنسان بأفكار غريبة، ربما تكون خاطئةً وربما تكون صائبةً، لكن هدفه تشكيك المسلم في عقيدته، أو تضليله للانحراف عن الطّريق القويم، ويظلّ الشّيطان مُسيطراً على فكر الإنسان ويُلازم صدره حتّى يدفع العبد للاعتقاد بفكرٍ ما يُودي به إلى الشّرك بالله، أو يُودي به إلى الوقوع في المُحرّمات، ويبثّ الفتنة بين الأفراد والأسر والجماعات، ويُثير العداوة والبغضاء بين أفراد المجتمع حتّى يقع الاقتتال بين النّاس

يمكن للمسلم أن يبتعد ويسلم من وساوس الشيطان بعدّة طرق جاء ذكرها في كتاب الله وفي سنة رسوله محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم وقد ذكر العلماء بعضاً من تلك الطرق والوسائل إن التزم بها المسلم نجا من وساوس الشيطان، وإن أصابه شيءٌ منها كان قوياً صلباً، أو على أقل تقدير خرج بأقل الخسائر،
